Starting the week with happy stewardship news!

In syilx territory, Osoyoos Indian Band and Nk’Mip Forestry are working to restore wildfire-impacted forests by planting native trees, shrubs, berries, and medicines.

The goal? More biodiversity, stronger fire resilience, healthier habitat, and more culturally important plants for community members to gather.

We’re cheering on every saskatoon berry, huckleberry, soapberry, and young tree helping bring this place back to life — of course, on the amazing land stewards who are making it happen! 🤎

🚨🌱Rare and vulnerable plant found on NTBC land! 🌱🚨

While removing invasive burdock from one of our conservation areas, the NTBC Kootenay Conservation Land Management team discovered wild licorice (Glycyrrhiza lepidota), a rare native plant not previously surveyed at that site!

Wild licorice is an important host plant for the Silver-spotted Skipper butterfly (Epargyreus clarus), an endangered species in BC, which lays its eggs on the plant and relies on it to feed its caterpillars.

In BC, wild licorice is vulnerable to extirpation or extinction and is ecologically fragile. Because it typically grows on low-elevation floodplains and riverbanks, its habitat is under pressure from development, invasive plants, and human activity.

Finding this small population of rare wild licorice on an NTBC conservation area is an encouraging sign that removing invasive species and protecting habitat can help BC’s biodiversity thrive!

Our thoughts are with the communities, conservation partners, and colleagues affected by the wildfires in BC’s Interior this week, and for the first responders and support workers who are working tirelessly to keep our province safe.

Today, we’re looking back at 1980s BC with these stunning film wildlife photos captured by early NTBC team members!

🐏Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus): BC is home to about 50,000 mountain goats, more than half of the world’s population!

🐻Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis): This bear is taking part in an annual salmon run along one of BC’s many rivers and estuaries.

🌾Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou): BC’s caribou population has declined from about 40,000 to 17,000 due to habitat loss and change. Indigenous traditional knowledge and provincially funded management programs are helping support their recovery.

NTBC focuses on acquiring and protecting natural areas across BC, with a priority on safeguarding the species that call our province home. Happy !

Our Kootenay Conservation Land Management team has been busy restoring NTBC conservation areas in the Kootenay region this July! 🌱 Here’s what they’ve been up to:

🪶The team went bird watching at Elizabeth Lake with some members of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists (SE British Columbia), ending the day with a lovely hike!

🪓Clipping some invasive purple loosestrife.

🪵Installing “No Firewood Cutting” signs on NTBC conservation areas. It is crucial that we leave trees (alive or dead) untouched for wildlife habitat and ecological integretiy.

🌾Joined the Okanagan Nation Alliance at the Arrow Lake conservation area to identify and mark North Africa Grass. This invasive grass poses a risk to protected sensitive grassland habitats which cover less than 1% of the province yet support over 30% of B.C.'s at-risk species.

🪺They found this adorable baby bird nest!

We’re excited to see what the crew discovers and tackles in August!
