First Steps Canada According to the World Food Programme, one in every five children in North Korea are chronically malnourished or ‘stunted’.

First Steps is committed to preventing child malnutrition in North Korea through programs that provide essential nutrients to young children and pregnant women. According to the U.N, over 43% percent of the population are undernourished. Because of the widespread famines and undernutrition, an entire generation of children is at risk of dying from curable diseases. Current rations provided by the

DPRK government can meet well less than half of the daily calorific needs for the 68% of the 16 million population receiving public food rations through the PDS. Most people struggle to make up the deficit through alternative means as they do not have the necessary purchasing power. First Steps is a Christian organization committed to preventing child malnutrition in North Korea through programs that provide essential nutrients to young children and pregnant women.

An encounter with a mother and her twin daughters from Hamhung in 2000 revealed the realities of child nutrition in North Korea, sparking the very beginnings of First Steps.
