BC Newcomer Camp

BC Newcomer Camp The BC Newcomer Camp is an initiative led by local university students to support recently arrived refugee children.

BC Newcomer Camp is a registered charity that supports recently arrived refugee children by operating free summer day camps that feature sports and English language education. By developing their English skills and engaging them in a variety of sports, we believe that our immersive and engaging environment will equip newly arrived refugee children with the language skills and confidence needed to

succeed in their new home. Their transitions will be made easier in the company of peers with a common background. In teaching a variety of sports, as well as leading arts and crafts activities, we intend to build friendships, community, teamwork, and confidence. Our camp includes staff members that are fluent in both Arabic and English, as well as members trained in specific sports.

And that’s a wrap for our 2024 Summer Camps! 🎓🌞

This summer, we had over 60 children participate in our Vancouver and Surrey programs. We welcomed both new faces and those who have been growing with us over the years. The summer was packed with activities—endless games of soccer, musical chairs and hot potato, arts and crafts, and plenty of learning.

Our children shared some of their favourite moments including: « making slime, » « playing soccer, » « listening and dancing to music (specifically ‘Waka Waka’),” and « making new friends. »

Here are some key stats about the backgrounds of our children:

- 15% arrived in Canada within the last 6 months
- 30% within the last year
- 30% within the last two years
- 25% have been here for 2+ years

The children represented a wide range of countries, with 40% from Eritrea, 20% from Ukraine, 10% from Colombia, 10% from Syria, and the rest from countries such as Afghanistan, Mexico, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Vietnam.

Although our summer camps have come to an end, our work continues throughout the year. Be sure to check out our ongoing programs as we’re always on the lookout for volunteers and participants!

Our year-long programs include:

- A Path to Wellness - Mental Health Program: A space for newcomer youth to navigate mental health challenges and foster community connections through conversation circles and professional counselling sessions.

- The Entryway Foundation: Provides fundamental online English classes to adult newcomers upon their arrival in BC, bridging the gap until they can access comprehensive ESL courses.

- After-school Program: Online English classes for children during the school year with a focus on building English language skills in a fun and welcoming environment and increasing digital literacy.

Soccer has always been a cornerstone of BC Newcomers. Our children come from diverse backgrounds, speaking many languages, yet the game of soccer transcends these differences, by finding common ground on the soccer field. It builds community, brings joy, and teaches essential skills such as teamwork and communication.

This past weekend, BC Newcomers had the pleasure of participating in our third annual Whitecaps soccer camp, organized by the Whitecaps Community Soccer Experience team! Our children channeled their inner professional soccer players, enjoying a weekend filled with games, team bonding, and fun. We extend our heartfelt thank you to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC for this incredible opportunity once again.

We also extend a very special thank you to Shaheen FC for their support in making this event possible! ⚽ 🥇

Program and Volunteer Spotlight: The Entryway Foundation Program

We are thrilled to announce the launch of The Entryway Foundation, an ESL program for newcomer adults. The program is designed to meet the language needs of newcomers in British Columbia.

This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our incredible co-founders, Lennox Donaher and Jackson Falk.

Lennox and Jackson have been instrumental in developing this program, ensuring it addresses the unique challenges faced by newcomers with limited English proficiency. Their commitment to providing accessible, flexible, and impactful language education is helping to bridge the gap for many in our community.

The Entryway Foundation offers free online courses with flexible scheduling, tailored to fit the needs of those who face barriers to traditional ESL courses. The curriculum focuses on teaching conversational phrases and essential communication skills to help newcomers feel more connected and confident in their daily lives.

Thank you, Lennox and Jackson, for your remarkable contributions!

BC Newcomers is proud to announce that we are one of the recipients of UBC’s Chapman & Innovation Grant to launch our new program, « A Path to Wellness: Newcomer Youth Mental Health Program. »

Access to healthcare and social determinants of health after migration significantly shape newcomers’ resettlement experiences and influence their recovery from trauma endured before and during migration. Our program is dedicated to enhancing the accessibility and availability of mental health support for newcomers, addressing the critical need for immediate counselling. Communities in British Columbia face significant backlogs, with waitlists extending up to 6-8 months, and there is an additional challenge in finding culturally-informed counsellors who can communicate in the client’s language.

This project aims to bridge these gaps by empowering newcomers through weekly conversation circles in order to foster community connections and provide a safe space for navigating mental health challenges, and provide direct access to certified counsellors.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting and vital initiative that we are incredibly passionate about!!
