A breakthrough surgical innovation is taking shape at VGH.

Dr. Graziano Oldani and his team are developing the “pancreatic ring,” a first‑of‑its‑kind device designed to reduce post‑surgical pancreatic enzyme leakage.

This technology could dramatically improve patient outcomes and speed up recovery times — meaning patients can begin critical post‑surgical treatments like chemotherapy sooner, improving survival rates and quality of life.

The continued development of the device is made possible by the extraordinary generosity of Shirley Barnett, and David Barnett & Sara Ferguson. Their collective philanthropic support has propelled this novel technology from concept to reality. We are deeply grateful for the Barnett family’s generosity and are honoured to celebrate David’s memory through this groundbreaking advancement.

For Shweta Sahota, this Mother’s Day means everything.

After the traumatic delivery of her first child, she was diagnosed with a severe neurological disorder and endured months of debilitating pain. The thought of another pregnancy was terrifying.

But thanks to her neurologist, Dr. Alyson Plecash, and the new Women’s Stroke Clinic at VGH supported by VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, Shweta safely welcomed her second child — embracing motherhood again without fear.

As the first of its kind in Western Canada, the Women’s Stroke Clinic at VGH provides specialized care for women across BC and the Yukon with a focus on high-risk times like pregnancy and menopause. And it was made possible thanks to donors like you.

A BC-based surgical innovation is reducing ovarian cancer risk by nearly 80 percent, according to new groundbreaking research funded by donors like you.

Pioneered at VGH, opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) involves proactively removing a person’s fallopian tubes when they are already undergoing a routine gynecological surgery. In a study of more than 85,000 people between 2008 and 2020, researchers found that patients who received OS were 78 percent less likely to develop serious ovarian cancer.

On the heels of this study, BC recently became the first jurisdiction in the world to offer OS to routine procedures performed by gynecologic, general, and urologic surgeons, benefiting patients in BC first. With increasing international attention, OS has the potential to save thousands of lives worldwide.

A new donor-funded service is improving access to care for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) 💚

SCI Nav (Spinal Cord Injury Navigation), offered by Vancouver Coastal Health, connects people living with SCI, their families, clinicians, and caregivers across BC and the Yukon with expert support and guidance — with no referral required.

SCI Nav helps patients:

+ Navigate treatment, rehabilitation, and life with SCI
+ Access SCI-specific resources and education
+ Connect with specialists at the world-class G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre
+ Transition from the hospital to community care

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation is proud to support the SCI Nav program in delivering more accessible care to everyone in BC. We are grateful to the Rick Hansen Foundation for their generous gift that established this program.

The hyperbaric chamber at VGH just got a major upgrade to improve patient safety. And it’s thanks to your support of the VGH+ Hometown Heroes Lottery.

The only hospital-based hyperbaric oxygen treatment centre in BC, the hyperbaric chamber is often used by people who have experienced carbon monoxide poisoning, burns, or diving-related injuries. It allows patients to breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized steel chamber to stimulate healing, reduce swelling, and fight infections.

Each Hometown Heroes ticket funds critically needed medical equipment, helping BC’s bravest save and improve lives. This is the power of VGH+ You.

Meet Owen Cameron, a volunteer, leader, and advocate for better care in BC.

A long-time volunteer with VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, Owen serves as a Board Member, VGH+ Gala Past Chair, and Co-Founder & Board Chair of the Plunge for the Cure Foundation, which raises money to support ovarian cancer research at VGH and UBC.

Owen says he chose to volunteer with VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation to support all the frontline workers and world-renowned leaders in medical research and clinical care who are advancing health care in BC. Through his various roles, he has seen first-hand the impact that volunteerism has on patients and families across our community.

“Volunteering with the Foundation has been incredibly rewarding, especially seeing how a committed community can come together to drive real and lasting impact.”

Thank you, Owen, for your continued leadership and commitment.

Three-time cancer survivor. Proud VGH+ volunteer.

As continues, we’re spotlighting Genevieve McLean, a member of our Greater Than Cancer campaign cabinet – helping to raise essential funds for cancer care and research at VGH – and 2026 VGH+ Gala committee.

“I wouldn’t be here unless VGH was there. It’s a very simple science. I got the chance to survive. I have to do as much as I possibly can to make sure there are more survivors.”

We are sincerely grateful to volunteers like Genevieve, whose commitment to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation helps save and improve lives across BC.

This is the power of VGH+ You.
