Who was Joe Average?
Joe Average (1957–2024), born Brock David Tebbutt, was a celebrated Vancouver artist, LGBTQ+ advocate, and humanitarian whose vibrant, colourful artwork became an iconic part of the city’s cultural landscape. After being diagnosed with HIV in the 1980s, he dedicated his life to creating art that inspired hope, love, and compassion while raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and supporting countless charitable causes. Through his murals, public art, and community activism, Joe Average left a lasting legacy as one of Canada’s most beloved q***r artists, using creativity to champion inclusivity, resilience, and the power of community.
