During her recent visit to BC Children’s Hospital, Anna Cathcart shared moments of connection with kids and youth who know her from their favourite TV shows.

But long before she lit up our screens, the BC-born actor experienced BC Children’s from a very different perspective: as a patient receiving mental health support.

Now she’s sharing her story to remind people that mental health challenges are not something to go through alone, and that asking for support can change everything.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re so grateful to Anna for speaking openly about her experience. Because sometimes the words, “I’ve been there too,” are exactly what someone needs to hear.

Nearly 40 years ago, Dr. David Scheifele helped establish the Vaccine Evaluation Center at BC Children’s.

Nearly 40 years ago, BC Children’s Vaccine Evaluation Center began with just two people working out of a portable cabin. Today, its research is helping protect children across BC and beyond.

Dr. Sadarangani, Director of the Vaccine Evaluation Center, recently shared this remarkable story with members of our Legacy Circle. Canada’s first centre for independent vaccine research now runs 20 to 40 studies at any given time, and its work has helped shape almost every vaccine on BC’s childhood immunization schedule.

That includes research that helped reduce the HPV vaccine from three doses to one, showed that many children with cancer or organ transplants can safely receive certain live vaccines, and is helping researchers develop new vaccines against drug-resistant infections.

But some of the most important breakthroughs are still years away. Dr. Sadarangani’s team hopes research happening in the lab today could become vaccines in the next 10 to 15 years.

When your family is facing the unimaginable, someone else’s generosity can mean more than they may ever know. Almost nine years ago, Sophie was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and reflecting on their experience at BC Children’s, her dad Alan shared:
“When a family walks through the doors of BC Children’s Hospital, they are living inside someone else’s generosity. They may never know the donor’s name. But they feel the impact every single day.”

Sophie is now doing well, and her family’s experience has deeply shaped how they think about giving back and the difference generosity can make.

For families who live far from BC Children’s, getting to specialized care can be a journey of its own.

After Sylas was airlifted to BC Children’s following a serious mountain biking accident, his family faced ongoing specialist appointments and many trips back and forth from their home in the Interior.

For them, support from Air Canada Foundation / Fondation Air Canada made a meaningful difference.

“What you give is so much more than transportation. You give families access to care,” Sylas’ mom Jen shared.

From October 5–11, Air Canada is matching the Aeroplan points you donate, helping more families travel to BC Children’s when they need it most.

Dr. Carmen Tait, a Gitxsan and Nisga’a pediatrician, is helping improve access to care for Indigenous children and youth as the Indigenous Health Program lead at BC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Tait works towards cultural safety within the hospital while building relationships with Indigenous communities across BC to provide clinics that care for children closer to home. Through the program, families receive Indigenous-led approaches to care that honor the strengths, Indigenous identities and knowledge systems that support thriving communities.

Michael Cuccione’s legacy continues to make an extraordinary impact for kids facing cancer. After Michael passed away from complications related to his cancer treatment, his family carried forward the foundation he started and continued his mission to create a better future for children with cancer. Their dedication helped establish the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program, where researchers continue to push for better, safer treatments and new possibilities for kids.

At 12, Madeline Lauener was facing cancer. Years later, that experience brought her back to BC Children’s as a researcher with the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program.

Today, she’s a postdoctoral fellow and Thymus/Immunology Research Team Lead at a medical centre in California.

From patient to researcher, Madeline embodies Michael Cuccione’s vision for a future where childhood cancer inspires progress, possibility and hope.
