Canada must assert its sovereign foreign policy on Cuba and oppose the unlawful U.S. fuel blockade and extraterritorial sanctions against Cuba.

This is what CoDev expressed to Deputy Minister Cynthia Termorshuizen of Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada on October 1. Thank you to the BC Council for International Cooperation for organizing the meeting and to the Deputy Minister for taking the time to meet with and listen to Canadian civil society organizations working to support human rights across the world.

On July 7 at the United Nations General Assembly, 136 nations voted to resume the debate on ending the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Canada was among only 30 nations that abstained.

For over three decades, under both Liberal and Conservative governments, Canada has voted in support of ending the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Children in Cuba are dying, health outcomes are deteriorating, and people are hungry. Canada’s abstention in July was unconscionable and failed to meet the moment.

As we told Deputy Minister Cynthia Termorshuizen, we call on the Government of Canada to reaffirm its historic opposition to the U.S. embargo at the United Nations this fall by supporting the annual resolution to end the embargo.

We must not throw Cuba under the bus to appease the current U.S. government. History is on our side.

Our pleasure to meet with the Consul General from the Cuban Embassy in Canada along with the Vancouver & District Labour Council and the Canadian Network on Cuba.

Today, members of the VDLC Executive Board met with CoDevelopment Canada, Canadian Network on Cuba, and Embajada de Cuba en Canadá Consul General Victor Manuel Garcia Sanchez to discuss solidarity between workers in our two countries, and how people in Canada can help push back on the brutal, inhumane blockade of Cuba by the United States. Both of our countries are facing aggression at the hands of the U.S. We must stand together. Cuba Si, Bloqueo No!

In 2024, when CUPE Southern Interior District Council (SIDC) heard that their Cuban union partners, SNTAP-Havana, were in need of solidarity supplies, SIDC mobilized to break the blockade by collecting and purchasing loads of supplies, like period products, for their partners.

The Cuban Consul General will be visiting Vancouver on Sept 21, the United Nations International Day of Peace.

We are co-hosting a public event with the Consul General along with speakers from the Vancouver & District Labour Council, Apartheid Free Communities, the Vancouver Peace Council, the Canadian Network on Cuba, and CoDev. Discussions will be centered around updates on the current situation in Cuba, and the necessity of growing the peace and solidarity movement, with the involvement of organized labour.

This will be a free event so please invite anyone who may be interested!
