The group has successfully helped thousands of couples in cross-border relationships gain permanent residence in Canada. Since 1991, LEGIT has lobbied for changes to immigration process, policies and law.

"Guaranteed approval” can sound comforting when so much of your future feels uncertain.

But a promise becomes dangerous when it offers certainty no one can give. No representative can guarantee that IRCC will approve a sponsorship application.

What you can ask for is something more substantial: careful preparation, honest guidance, clear explanations and respect for the facts of your relationship.

For LGBTQ+ couples navigating spousal or common-law sponsorship, confidence should come from understanding the process — not from impossible promises.

The family we were born into.
The family we built.
The partner who became home.
The friends who stayed.
The people who gave us a place to belong when belonging was not always easy.

For many LGBTQ+ people, the word family can carry its own story.

Today, whatever your table looks like and whoever is sitting beside you, we hope there is warmth, kindness and a little more room for gratitude.

Coming out is not an obligation.

It is not a deadline.
It is not a test of courage.
And there is no single “right” way to do it.

For some people, coming out is a celebration.
For others, it happens quietly.
For some, safety, family, culture, immigration circumstances, or simply personal choice mean the right time hasn't arrived—or may never need to.

On National Coming Out Day, we celebrate the freedom to be known as yourself while respecting something equally important:

A single detail can be true — and still reveal only a fraction of the story.

A photograph, a message, a shared record: each may hold one moment. Together, with the right context, they can begin to show the life around it — who you are to each other, what changed over time, and how your relationship became part of everyday life.

In an LGBTQ+ partner sponsorship application, evidence becomes more meaningful when the reader can understand the story it belongs to.

Distance reshapes everyday life. It does not erase the ways two people remain present for one another.

For LGBTQ+ partners living apart, the story may be carried through calls at the end of a long day, messages across time zones, visits planned months ahead, and the countless small ways you continue to share your lives.

When preparing a sponsorship application, give that distance a human context. Show not only that you stayed in touch, but how the relationship lived between the moments you could be together.
