Yesterday, we hosted a Community BBQ focused on educating and engaging the community in conversations about the role of connection in mental health. This year’s theme, “Come Together Canada: Stronger Connection, Better Mental Health,” helped frame discussions around how social connection directly supports emotional well-being.

Throughout the event, we highlighted how the clubhouse model promotes mental health by providing structure, meaningful daily activities, and opportunities for individuals to build a sense of purpose and belonging. We also informed the community how these elements are essential to recovery and contribute to overall well-being for individuals living with mental health challenges.

Community members gained insight into how inclusive environments and strong social networks can reduce isolation, increase resilience, and improve overall quality of life.

The conversations sparked during the BBQ reinforced an important message: when we prioritize connection and inclusion, we help create healthier, more supportive communities for everyone.

Happy Mental Health Week!

We are so grateful for the incredible support shown from community leaders at our April 29 100th International Clubhouse Training Breakfast!

We were honoured to welcome Maria Henein from the Office of Associate Minister of Mental Health & Addictions Vijay Thanigasalam, who opened our morning by presenting a letter of support from the Minister, underscoring the province’s commitment to community-based mental health care.

MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam delivered powerful remarks highlighting the importance of recovery-oriented supports in Toronto Centre and across Ontario and Canada, and Councillor Chris Moise, Chair of the Toronto Board of Health, closed the welcome program with remarks reinforcing the City’s dedication to preventive, community-based mental health solutions.

Our international delegation included administrators from Clubhouses in San Antonio, Texas, Flint, Michigan and Welland, Port Cobourg and St. Catherines, Ontario, who are completing comprehensive training at Progress Place to bring the Clubhouse Model to their communities.

This gathering was a testament to the power of partnerships, provincial, municipal, and global, working together to transform lives through the Clubhouse vision.

Thank you to all our guests, members, and staff for making this event so impactful.

Around the World of Clubhouse: this month we're in Maine, USA.

From feeling stuck to building a future.

After high school, Anthony felt lost: no structure, no purpose, and unsure of what came next. Everything began to change when he joined Village Clubhouse.

Today, Anthony is building the life he once couldn’t imagine with confidence, purpose, and hope for the future.

His story is a reminder: with the right support, recovery is possible.

Yesterday, we were honoured to welcome the Honourable Vijay Thanigasalam, Ontario’s Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, to Progress Place for a tour of our Clubhouse.

Minister Thanigasalam toured our community, met with members, and saw firsthand how the internationally recognized Clubhouse Model provides wraparound mental health supports, with no waitlists, to help Ontarians recover, gain employment, secure housing, and build meaningful social connections.

We were proud to share the positive impact of our work and the economic and social benefits of our recovery-based, member-driven services.

Thank you, Minister, for your time, your thoughtful questions, and your commitment to improving mental health supports across Ontario.

This week, Progress Place was thrilled to welcome leaders from Ontario Health: Graham Woodward (Vice President, Mental Health and Addictions Centre of Excellence), Terra Cadeau (Director, Planning, Performance, Operations & Engagement) and CAMH: Dr. Paul Kurdyak (Staff Psychiatrist), for an in-depth tour of our Clubhouse! Our Executive Director Criss Habal showcased how our unique model delivers proven results - reducing hospital visits, improving quality of life, and fostering employment for those we serve.

We had productive discussions about integrating our effective, zero-waitlist approach into broader mental health strategies across Ontario. Thank you for an engaging visit and for recognizing the vital impact of the Clubhouse Model!

Around the World of Clubhouse: this month we're in Ohio, USA

This Women’s History Month, we honour our women Clubhouse colleagues who are integral to our community.

Meet Lori D'Angelo, Executive Director of Magnolia Clubhouse and longtime leader of the Clubhouse movement. Lori shares the story of Magnolia's growth and success.

"Magnolia Clubhouse was originally established as Hill House in 1961. The organization had a long history of high quality and worked in tandem with the Clubhouse model as it grew. Magnolia Clubhouse was formally established in 2004 and continued to expand, obtaining funding from the Ohio Department of Mental Health, which allowed us to expand the model across the state. There are now 11 organizations developing Clubhouses in Ohio. We worked with our neighboring states of Michigan and Pennsylvania and developed advocacy best practices to expand the model in Ohio, and are now sharing our experience with New York and other states to further the growth of the Clubhouse model across the country.

I discovered Hill House as a doctoral graduate student in psychology in 1993, was hired after I completed my post doctoral fellowship in 1997 and have been here ever since, and lucky for me, finding Hill House changed and made my life so rich! "

Clubhouse Movement Celebration Week!

"My experience with the Clubhouse has been phenomenal! In stages I have grown, in an inviting environment, from being shy to more outgoing. I can be myself."

Around the World of Clubhouse: This Month we're in Pennsylvania, USA

Membership Without Barriers. Recovery Without Limits.

"At Clubhouse of Lehigh County, we are proud to celebrate members whose journeys reflect resilience, growth, and leadership — and Sabrina Parker is a powerful example of that spirit.

When Sabrina first became a member, she was experiencing homelessness and navigating significant life challenges. Through the support and community of the Clubhouse, Sabrina was able to secure supportive housing, connect with peer specialist and case management services, and begin building stability and confidence in her daily life.

Today, Sabrina is a respected and emerging leader in our Culinary Arts Unit, where she contributes her skills, creativity, and encouragement to fellow members. Her commitment, reliability, and passion for teamwork have made a meaningful impact on our community.

Sabrina is also excited to take the next step in her Clubhouse journey — attending Comprehensive Clubhouse Training this May at Gateway Clubhouse in Greenville. This opportunity reflects not only her personal growth, but her dedication to strengthening the Clubhouse model and supporting others on their paths to recovery.

We are honored to walk alongside Sabrina and can’t wait to see what’s ahead for her."

"Coming to Progress Place gave me structure, a routine, and an outlet for socialization. During the pandemic I was very isolated, but Progress Place has brought me the structure I needed back into my life and helped me increase my self-esteem. I was also recently chosen to become a board member. I'm still fairly new, but I'm learning so many new things. I am so grateful for the experiences and opportunities I have had so far. My friends and family outside of Progress Place have noticed a big difference in me." - Marlene
