For our final installment in our Inside Outpatient series, we’re taking you to our Blue Door Clinic 💙

BDC provides free health care services for people living with HIV in the Greater Toronto Area who are uninsured or precariously insured. Many of these folks are navigating the immigration system and are waiting to get connected to long-term insurance plans like OHIP. The interdisciplinary Blue Door Clinic team takes their time when providing holistic care to build genuine connections with clients—because everyone deserves dignified and compassionate care!

Casey House is thrilled to be mentioned on CTV Your Morning during an interview with Earl Charles Spencer and Anne-Marie Mediwake. Anne-Marie brought up Princess Diana’s visit to Casey House in 1991, which sent shockwaves across the globe as she was seen shaking hands with people living with HIV/AIDS. She even shared images from our personal photo book with Charles.

Unfortunately, HIV stigma is still prevalent today in social communities and public institutions. But each day, we take inspiration from people like Diana to rise above it all and to embrace the humanity in each individual. Our Princess still remains in our hearts each day at Casey House, now a hospital supporting compassionate care for people living with and at-risk of HIV.

Moving forward with our Inside Outpatient series, we are excited to share more about our physiotherapy services 💚

Our outpatient physiotherapist Carolann is a physiotherapy expert with specialization in neurological-related rehabilitation and caring for people aging with HIV. Older adults with HIV are more likely to need physiotherapy treatments due to having multiple comorbidities and accelerated physical decline associated with long-term HIV. That’s where Carolann steps in, with exercises, stretches, equipment, and plenty of education presented in a way that actually resonates with our clients.

On September 30, we acknowledge the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation . This annual day of recognition honours residential school survivors, their families, communities, and every child who did not return home. We recognize that every child matters.

As we continue to challenge colonial systems that have harmed Indigenous people, we look to the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Casey House is committed to improving Indigenous health outcomes through expanding cultural resources for clients and adding more trauma-informed training for our team.

To continue our education on Indigenous care at Casey House, our staff participated in a facilitated session led by Inner City Health Associates CEO, Dr. Michael Anderson, and Sunnybrook Indigenous Health and Partnership Lead, Leonard Benoit. During this workshop, staff learned more about Indigenous approaches to health, sacred tools, and leading relationship building with intention.

Thank you once again to Dr. Anderson and Benoit for facilitating this learning circle. This is just one step towards progress as we continue to strive to build a safer environment for our Indigenous community.

For our next installment of Inside Outpatient Care 🔁, we introduce you to our recreational therapists 💜

Rec therapists use their clinical expertise to help clients to participate in activities that are enjoyable and accessible. Having fun is serious business for them. While many medical disciplines focus on objective biomarkers, recreational therapy helps bring colour and purpose to people’s lives. By making leisure approachable and obtainable, rec therapy can improve one’s physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

They rise to the challenge against overwhelming forces of applications, institutional jargon, and bureaucracy that directly impacts a client’s ability to access services or resources. Whether it’s applying for an ID, financial support program, referrals, or a new opportunity, SSWs are here to support clients get them connected to care!

Outpatient care at Casey House features a wide range of programs and services from our interdisciplinary clinical team. While separate in their expertise, each team provides specialized care that works in harmony with one another. Today, we’re kicking things off with our Inside Outpatient Care 🔁 series by featuring our supervised consumption services ❤️

At the SCS, clients can use their substances while being monitored for adverse reactions, including overdose. But it’s not just a room with sterile equipment, it’s a landing place for clients to find warmth, resources, and social connection. Harm reduction workers and peers serve clients with a judgement-free approach.
