Today, we’re highlighting Zanana Akande, a trailblazer in education, politics, and community advocacy. Born in Toronto to Caribbean immigrant parents, she earned degrees from the University of Toronto and began her career as a teacher while actively supporting her community.
In 1990, she became the first Black woman elected to Ontario’s Legislative Assembly and later the first appointed to Cabinet, where she advanced employment equity, social services, and youth opportunities. She continued her advocacy beyond politics through organizations like the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, championing social justice and community empowerment.
