Block Line delivered 41 supportive homes in one year. How did the team do it, and could the approach work elsewhere?

At the 2026 ONPHA Conference, Jennifer Breaton (YWCA KW) , Lyndsey Rolheiser (York University) and Lily Huang (Branch) will walk through the decisions that helped move the project quickly, from mass timber construction and prefabricated components to municipal approvals. They’ll also look at what it would take to finance and repeat the model now that the Rapid Housing Initiative has ended.

Planning matters when it comes to building and preserving community housing. 🏘️

ONPHA was excited to join planners and housing professionals at the in Blue Mountain for a timely conversation about housing, affordability and the role planning can play in making community housing projects viable.

Together with our partners at Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) we explored:

🏗️ How planning decisions can affect the viability of community housing projects

🏘️ How property acquisition can be a pathway to growing and preserving community housing

📊 How data can help decision-makers better understand local housing markets

We also gave a live demonstration of the Low-end of Market Rental Housing (LEMR) Monitor, which tracks how the lower end of Canada’s affordable rental housing stock is changing and uncovers trends that can help decision-makers better understand housing affordability.

We’re looking ahead to the next phase of our work with real estate analytics, exploring how more customized data and insights could help communities better understand their local housing markets and identify opportunities.
