We promote and celebrate safe cycling in Toronto East. We are committed to educating cyclists and drivers as well as creating a culture of sharing the roads. Through a number of events and initiatives we encourage others to cycle; be it for recreation, utilitarian reasons, or as commuters. We believe it is important to network cyclists. We advocate for cycling infrastructure and safe streets for a
ll users. East Toronto has traditionally been everything east of the Don Valley to Victoria Park. We recognize there is another 1/3 of Toronto beyond. In the fall of 2011, not long after Toronto City Council removed Bike lanes on Birchmount and Pharmacy, cyclists in the area came together to form TO35Cycles to promote and celebrate safe cycling in Toronto Ward 35, Soon after Ward 36 Cyclists was formed and from the beginning these two Southwest Scarborough groups began working together. In 2017 we became Toronto East Cyclists as these groups merged and our membership included people from across Scarborough. We also regularly network and collaborate with cyclists across the city, especially those on the east end of Toronto. In 2012 we held our first Bike Rodeo which would several years later become the Toronto East Bike Festival. In 2013 we began hosting a Bells on Danforth start point in Scarborough and in 2015 Bells included Danforth as far as the Danforth Road and Danforth Avenue intersection. In 2016 Scarborough Cycles was formed with cycling hubs in southwest Scarborough. Today we recognize that promoting cycling goes beyond boundaries of wards and even the borders of the previous city of Scarborough. We are now a collection of people finding ways to encourage others to cycle across the east end of Toronto. We are always looking for partners and new members. Watch for us at community events.
