Today, we hosted one of our signature Large-Scale Hiring Events at Scarborough Civic Centre, bringing together pre-screened jobseekers and employers with roles ready to fill across: Alithya, BMO, LOFT, Paragon Security, RBC Insurance, Sun Life, CBRE, Rogers, FGF Brands, Kelly Services, Aecon, Staples, CBI Health, Primerica and Scotiabank.

We were pleased to welcome David Smith, MPP for Scarborough Centre and Parliamentary Assistant for the Ministry of Energy and Mines, along with Councillor Michael Thompson, Ward 21 Scarborough Centre. Their attendance reflects a shared commitment to strengthening employment access for Scarborough residents.

Successful workforce development happens when skilled and ready candidates, engaged employers, government, and community partners work together to build career pathways, strengthen the economy, and keep communities moving.

“I have never seen anyone work harder than a refugee — they know what it’s like to have nothing.” — Andrea Chrysanthou

Andrea came to Canada as a child refugee from Cyprus, navigating a new language and a new country while her parents rebuilt their lives from scratch. That foundation — of hard work, adaptability, and empathy — became the basis of her award-winning career in communications.

Her message to employers is straightforward: “Have patience and you will reap the rewards.”

Ontario aims to expand the biomanufacturing workforce from 72,000 to 85,000 high-value jobs by 2030, as part of its Life Sciences Strategy.

If you have experience or education in biology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, quality control, lab work, or medicine manufacturing, our Connecting to Careers in Biomanufacturing program can help you take the next step toward Ontario’s growing biomanufacturing sector.

This full-time, 7-week hybrid program supports skilled newcomers with sector-specific training, Canadian workplace communication, job search support, and direct connections to employers.

Through the program, participants receive:

✔️ Technical training with Canadian Advanced Therapies Training Institute (CATTI) and BioTalent Canada
✔️ Workplace communication training delivered by Toronto Metropolitan University
✔️ Personalized job search support and 1:1 employment counselling
✔️ Access to hiring employers, networking events, and Speed Mentoring®
✔️ Mentorship and retention support as you move into your career

As refugees, you don’t always have a defined path — so you learn to create one.” — Nizar Ladak

Nizar came to Canada in 1973 after his family was expelled from Uganda under the Idi Amin regime. His parents went door to door looking for work to build a future for their children. That experience shaped everything, including a career spent leading innovation in Canada’s health and technology sectors.

His advice to employers? “Hire for attitude and teach the rest. Refugees bring resilience, teamwork, and fresh perspective — and the return on investment is hundredfold.”
