Just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become global shopping moments, Giving Tuesday (December 2) has grown into a global generosity movement - a day when people everywhere choose to give back, pay it forward, and support the causes that matter most to them.

At Health Africa in Canada, we’re inspired by supporters across Canada and around the world who choose to give to community-led, sustainable health solutions — strengthening health systems, expanding access to care, and training the health workers who are the backbone of care in more than 35 African countries.

This Giving Tuesday and holiday season, we invite you to join us in offering the lasting gift of health and hope.

Today, on World Children’s Day, we’re honouring the theme My Day, My Rights. We join with children and support their agency because every child deserves to grow up safe, educated, healthy, and free from fear.

For 13-year-old Phoebe Nemayian from Kajiado, Kenya, these rights mean everything.
Phoebe dreams of becoming a doctor. She keeps those dreams in a little green notebook covered in hand-drawn words: “My lifestyle book. Dr. Phoebe Nema. Do not steal, please.”

But in her community, many girls her age still live with the fear of female ge***al mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) which is a harmful practice that can lead to infection, trauma, early marriage, and even the end of their education.

Some can’t sleep at night, worried the cut will come suddenly, even in the dark, without warning.

Phoebe says, “Some girls say they can’t sleep because they know they might be cut the next day… it’s a terrible feeling to live in such fear.”

Phoebe was in primary school when she participated in (tag) Amref’s Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) program. She learned about the dangers of FGM/C and about her rights. ARP offers a safe, culturally respectful way for girls to celebrate their transition to womanhood without harm.

It also gives girls the confidence to stay in school, protect their health, and speak up for themselves and others.

Now, Phoebe uses her voice to advocate for change. “I tell those who still practice FGM/C to stop. We’ve been taught about its dangers.”

Join us in standing with Phoebe and all girls as we work to end FGM/C and ensure every girl has the right to safety, dignity, the chance to learn and to shape their own future.

Ahead of National Philanthropy Day, we’re celebrating one of our longtime monthly donors, Gwynneth Evans.

Gwynneth’s connection to Amref Health Africa began over 40 years ago, but her journey with Africa started long before that.

In the late 1960s, she taught in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Southern Sudan, living with local families and experiencing the joys and challenges of post-independence life. During that time, she first encountered Amref.

She’s visited our programs over the years and has valued seeing lasting impact. We love one of her favourite metaphors for Amref’s approach: “Amref is like a gardener, nurturing communities from the roots up, ensuring growth is sustainable and meaningful.”

We’re so grateful for Gwynneth and for all our monthly donors whose consistent support is empowering communities across Africa to grow stronger every day.

If this story resonates with you, we’d love to share more about our African-led health care programs and training. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Stronger health systems start right in the community.

Across Africa, community-based health workers (CHWs) deliver consistent, quality primary care such as screening, diagnosing, treating and vaccinating people against preventable diseases. They are also the first line of defence during public health emergencies such as COVID-19 and mpox and cholera.

Last year, Amref Health Africa trained more than 32,800 CHWs through in-person, digital, and mobile learning.

We continue to invest in health workers. Through the Strengthening Community Health Workforce in Africa project, funded by the Pfizer Foundation, Amref is supporting five districts in West Nile, Uganda to build a community health workforce that is equipped, trained, supported, and fairly compensated.

By October last year, in 2024, this project had already helped provide essential health services to more than 43,000 people across the five districts.

Digital tools are also transforming how health care reaches remote communities. We distributed 400 smartphones to Community Health Workers in Moyo District so they could collect and report data in real time to improve how health information is tracked, shared, and used to make decisions.

“Outreaches help us reach those who could not reach the health facility because of distance or lack of transport. Because of the digitalization, our reporting has increased, helping improve our key indicators at the health facility.”
- Negowon Nelly Rubanga, Midwife, Zombo District, Uganda

We’re pleased to support Community Health Workers who are committed to providing every community with the care, connection, and support it needs.

As we gather with families and friends this Canadian Thanksgiving, all of us at want to take a heartfelt moment to say thank you!

One of our guiding values is Ubuntu — “I am because we are.” It’s a beautiful reminder that our well-being is deeply connected to one another, and that we embrace compassion based on our shared humanity.

We’re so grateful to everyone who makes our connected journey and our mission possible:

To our communities and local leaders - your wisdom and dedication inspire us every single day.

To our incredible staff and volunteers - thank you for your passion, expertise, and tireless service.

To our donors and supporters - your generosity fuels the partnerships and health programs that help communities across Africa.

Together, we’ve made strides in strengthening health systems, expanding access to care, and investing in local health workers.

From all of us at Amref Health Canada, we wish you a joyful Thanksgiving!

Noel is a midwife in Malawi. Each day, he helps deliver new life into the world — often without running water.

“It wasn’t good for a mother to stay that long without cleaning herself,” Noel said.

You can change this. Your support can bring clean water and dignity to mothers and babies who need it most.
