Stronger health systems start right in the community.
Across Africa, community-based health workers (CHWs) deliver consistent, quality primary care such as screening, diagnosing, treating and vaccinating people against preventable diseases. They are also the first line of defence during public health emergencies such as COVID-19 and mpox and cholera.
Last year, Amref Health Africa trained more than 32,800 CHWs through in-person, digital, and mobile learning.
We continue to invest in health workers. Through the Strengthening Community Health Workforce in Africa project, funded by the Pfizer Foundation, Amref is supporting five districts in West Nile, Uganda to build a community health workforce that is equipped, trained, supported, and fairly compensated.
By October last year, in 2024, this project had already helped provide essential health services to more than 43,000 people across the five districts.
Digital tools are also transforming how health care reaches remote communities. We distributed 400 smartphones to Community Health Workers in Moyo District so they could collect and report data in real time to improve how health information is tracked, shared, and used to make decisions.
“Outreaches help us reach those who could not reach the health facility because of distance or lack of transport. Because of the digitalization, our reporting has increased, helping improve our key indicators at the health facility.”
- Negowon Nelly Rubanga, Midwife, Zombo District, Uganda
We’re pleased to support Community Health Workers who are committed to providing every community with the care, connection, and support it needs.
