For many adult learners, improving their literacy skills isn’t the end goal — it’s simply the pathway to another goal. Whether they’re pursuing a high school equivalency diploma, an industry certification, apprenticeship training, post-secondary education or a new career, literacy plays a critical role in helping learners achieve their ambitions.

As labour market demands continue to evolve, employers increasingly require formal credentials alongside practical experience. At the same time, many adults face barriers to obtaining those credentials due to gaps in reading, writing, numeracy, digital skills or confidence. This creates a unique opportunity for literacy practitioners to support learners on their journey toward meaningful employment and career advancement.

Today is a day to listen, learn and reflect, but the work of reconciliation extends far beyond September 30.

We all have a role to play in continuing to learn the truth, listening to and amplifying Indigenous voices, and building relationships rooted in respect and understanding.
