Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing free travel and accommodations for Canadians in financial need who must access medical care far from home. Since its inception in 1986, Hope Air has provided approximately 150,000 travel arrangements for patients regardless of age or medical need. For people living on a low income in small and rural communities, distance and cost are very real barriers to them accessing vital medical care. Hope Air is a unique and essential part of our Canadian healthcare system. Without the access Hope Air provides, our national system of universal healthcare coverage would fall short of its promise. Hope Air has been chosen as one of Canada’s best 100 charities by Maclean’s magazine, MoneySense magazine and Charity Intelligence based on efficiency, transparency and need.

Across Canada, the rising cost of everyday necessities, housing pressures and economic uncertainty are leaving many households with less financial flexibility. These challenges can be even greater for Hope Air patients living in rural and remote communities who are experiencing financial need.

For many patients, the cost of travelling for medical care can mean choosing between their health and their financial security.

In Hope Air’s 2026 Patient Survey, 58% of respondents said they would delay or cancel medical care if travel costs exceeded $500. No one should have to put their health at risk because they can’t afford to get there.

Hope Air helps remove this barrier, ensuring patients in rural and remote communities can access the medical care they need, when they need it.

Have a donor-advised fund (DAF)? You can help a patient reach the care they need. ✈️

October 8 is DAF Day Canada — a day to raise awareness of donor-advised funds and the difference they can make for charities across Canada.

If you have a DAF and Hope Air is a cause you care about, you can recommend a grant to help provide free travel support to patients and families who need to travel for medical care.

Your DAF can help make sure that where someone lives doesn’t determine whether they can access the care they need.

At four years old, Lev was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of childhood leukemia. His treatment journey took him and his family across continents, through two transplants and CAR-T cell therapy, before they eventually settled in Canada.

After a relapse, Lev began participating in clinical trials in Canada and the United States. But with many early-phase pediatric cancer trials concentrated at a handful of centres, accessing these treatments meant significant travel, accommodation and financial challenges.

The STEP-1 program, in partnership with Hope Air, provides upfront support for travel, accommodations, meals, gas and parking, helping families access clinical trials across Canada without the added financial burden.

For Lev and his family, this support helped them stay in Toronto during his treatment, dramatically reducing commuting time and allowing his father to balance work with caring for his son.

Today, at 12 years old, Lev continues to move forward, attending school, growing into a kind and supportive young person, and building his future.

Together, Hope Air and STEP-1, supported by ACCESS, are helping remove barriers to clinical trials so families can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time focused on what matters most: treatment, healing and being together. At 16, Tyson spends his time doing what he loves: playing soccer, riding his bike, spending time with friends and working when he can.

But for much of his life, he has also been travelling nearly 400 km from Kelowna to Vancouver to access specialized medical care that isn’t available close to home.

Tyson first travelled with Hope Air when he was just nine years old, following a medical emergency that led to a diagnosis of orofacial granulomatosis. Years later, after seeing numerous specialists in Kelowna, Tyson’s family travelled to Vancouver, where he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.

For Tyson and his family, access to flights means less time worrying about the cost and logistics of travelling long distances, and more time focused on getting the care he needs.

Hope Air has been part of Tyson’s journey since 2018 and he continues to travel to Vancouver for specialized care, with Hope Air.

After being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, Chantale needed to travel nearly 600 kilometers from Témiscaming to Montréal for reconstructive surgery. With Hope Air's support, she received flights, accommodations, meals, and ground transportation, allowing her to focus on her care instead of the cost and stress of getting there. Every person facing breast cancer deserves access to the care they need, regardless of where they live.

Helping more patients like Chantale is made possible through the support of organizations that share this commitment. We're proud to welcome the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation as a Hope Air supporter. Their commitment to improving the lives of people affected by breast cancer will help ensure patients across Quebec can access specialized medical care without the added burden of travel costs.

Après avoir reçu un diagnostic de cancer du sein de stade 3, Chantale a dû parcourir près de 600 kilomètres depuis Témiscamingue jusqu’à Montréal pour subir une chirurgie reconstructive. Grâce au soutien de Hope Air, elle a bénéficié de vols, d’un hébergement, de repas et de transports terrestres, ce qui lui a permis de se concentrer sur ses soins plutôt que sur le coût et le stress liés au déplacement. Toute personne confrontée au cancer du sein mérite d’avoir accès aux soins dont elle a besoin, quel que soit son lieu de résidence.

C’est grâce au soutien d’organisations qui partagent cet engagement qu’il est possible d’aider davantage de patientes comme Chantale. Nous sommes fiers d’accueillir la Fondation québécoise du cancer du sein parmi les partenaires de Hope Air. Son engagement à améliorer la vie des personnes touchées par le cancer du sein contribuera à garantir que les patientes de tout le Québec puissent accéder à des soins médicaux spécialisés sans avoir à supporter le fardeau supplémentaire des frais de déplacement.

The final Haul for Hope in St. John’s brought teams together for big pulls, big energy and an even bigger impact, raising $50,000 to help patients travel for vital medical care.

Last Friday, 16 teams came together at St. John's International Airport to pull a firetruck 100 metres to help Newfoundland and Labrador patients reach the medical care they need.

The challenge may have lasted just 100 metres, but the impact will go much farther. For patients who must travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres for vital care, Hope Air helps remove the financial and logistical barriers that can make that journey feel impossible.

The plane may have weighed 67,000 pounds, but the heart behind this year’s Haul for Hope was even bigger. At the third annual Haul for Hope in Edmonton, presented by WestJet, nine teams put their strength to the test, pulling a 67,000-pound WestJet aircraft 100 metres across the tarmac at Edmonton International Airport.

The friendly competition was exciting, but the impact goes far beyond the finish line. Together, participants and supporters raised $50,000 to help patients and caregivers travel to the medical care they need, no matter how far from home it may be.

This year’s event was especially meaningful as we celebrated 40 years of Hope Air connecting Canadians to care and 30 years of WestJet serving Canadians.

A huge thank you to WestJet, Edmonton International Airport, our incredible teams, volunteers and every supporter who helped make this day possible. When we all pull together, we can help remove distance as a barrier to vital healthcare.
