U of T psychology professor Morgan Barense believes many of them may not have an intellectual impairment — but a motor control condition that makes it impossible to execute the signals their brains are sending. Alison Motluk's piece follows Barense's research alongside Isaiah Grewal, a 22-year-old non-speaker who communicates by keyboard and holds a graduate fellowship at Stony Brook University.
