In a last-mile village in Rubanda District, Medius has spent most of her life farming to support her family while her husband works as a lumberman. For years, she grew Irish potatoes, beans, and sorghum, but low yields and limited access to inputs and credit made it difficult to plan ahead. "Pesticides were expensive to get. Additionally, unpredictable weather, low harvests, and no way to access credit make it difficult to plan beyond a season," she shares.
In 2025, her community partnered with RTV. Through training and access to improved seeds and tools, Medius began applying new practices. "We participated in practical sessions which included line planting, spacing, application of liquid and compost manure, and timely planting," she says.
The results were soon visible. "For the first time, we had more for selling than for consuming at home," she shares. "From the 4 kg of beans, I was able to harvest 124 kg." With increased income, she invested in livestock and joined a women's savings group. Medius saves between UGX 2,000 and UGX 10,000 every week, providing her with a safety net and the ability to plan ahead. With her savings and a loan, she purchased her first pig. She has since borrowed again to add another piglet, beginning the foundation of the livestock project she has long been planning.
Medius is steadily shaping the future she wants. She hopes to expand her livestock farm by adding more cows, pigs, and goats, and she looks forward to improving her family's home. "I am a hardworking lady, and I hope in the near future, we will be able to get a permanent house," she says.
