Girls face struggles not just on the soccer pitch but in their daily lives.

Through our work, we know that:
🔹133 million girls remain out of school globally.
🔹At least 200 million girls and women have undergone female ge***al mutilation.
🔹12 million girls become child brides each year.

Around the world, these inequalities shapes girls’ lives by limiting their safety, freedom, and opportunities before they even reach adulthood.

Children are never a target.

Children are never a target.

At least 17 people, including 2 children have been killed in one of largest Russian attacks on in recent months.

Children must never be targeted and their safety must come first.

Responding to the strikes, which took place overnight and into the early hours of Tuesday morning, Sven Coppens, Director for East and Central Europe at Plan International, said:

“Children and young people should not have to pay the consequences of Russian aggression, but time after time, this is the reality. Whether as a result of large-scale strikes in urban areas, as we have seen over the last 24 hours, or through the deliberate targeting of schools and playgrounds, they are consistently caught up in this conflict.”

Faith grew up witnessing gender-based violence in her home. Now she’s building something that gives women and girls opportunities to be safe, all while addressing the lack of accessible menstrual health products.

Not having pads can mean girls missing school or using unsafe materials to manage their periods. For women, making pads means the ability to earn an income, gain independence, and gain freedom from violence.

Give the gift of reusable period pads and help make sure periods never limit a girl’s opportunity.

Fatima’s courage shines through, even when her family experiences violence in Port Sudan. Recalling an attack on the city, she says: “I was asleep, but my brother kept crying and my mother tried to comfort us. I still wasn’t scared.”

War has left Sudan in crisis. With nearly 13 million people displaced and 30.4 million in need of humanitarian aid, a third of the population is affected by food insecurity. Fatima’s story reminds us that there are 13 million lives behind these statistics.

If you could say something to your 7-year-old self, what would you say?

Mouhamadou would tell himself: “When you grow up, you’ll be a doctor.”

After his father was deported from the United States and his parents divorced, Mouhamadou worked from a young age to help support his younger siblings. He saw school as a way forward. Plan International’s Child Sponsorship program paid his school fees and helped him imagine a future beyond survival.

Today, Mouhamadou is a general practitioner committed to improving health care in his community. He also advocates for girls’ health, including an end to female ge***al mutilation.

Who are you cheering for at the FIFA World Cup? 21-year-old Yawa Denise will be rooting for the women in the middle of the pitch – trailblazing referees Stephanie Frappart, Yoshimi Yamash*ta and Salima Mukansanga.

In Yawa’s community in Guinea, it’s rare to see women officiating soccer matches, and just as rare for girls to reach university. Yawa is doing both. After completing a referee training program offered by Plan International, she now officiates amateur matches, and is the first girl in her village to attend university.

“I was afraid of the reactions of my parents, friends, and community because I am a girl... But I refused to let their doubts define my future,” she says.

She has already broken two barriers. The third one she’s still chasing – to one day become a FIFA ref. Want to know how she plans to get there? Subscribe to our newsletter and get first access to her story when it launches in June: https://bit.ly/4tUH7Aa
