Today is World Parrot Day. 🦜 Did you know that one of their greatest threats is the pet trade? 💔

Many captive parrots develop behavioural issues like feather plucking or self-mutilation due to stress and boredom. Their long lifespans often mean they outlive their owners, leading to abandonment or repeated rehoming. The pet trade fuels both illegal trafficking and the decline of wild parrots, making it one of the biggest threats to their survival.

An undercover investigation by our US office and Strategies for Ethical and Environmental Development (SEED) shows just how much suffering can occur in the pet trade and exposes the appalling conditions at US bird mills.

This World Otter Day, help us change the narrative for otters online! 🦦 We know their cuteness is hard to resist, but engaging in otter entertainment actually causes them harm. Please, only observe these incredible animals in the wild. Share this message with your friends and family. 🔁

Across Ontario, countless wild animals remain trapped in roadside zoos, suffering in captivity for entertainment and profit. Bears, lions, monkeys and other wild animals continue to endure life within a system that normalizes their exploitation. 🦁

For decades, weak regulations and little oversight have allowed these facilities to operate unchecked. With no consistent licensing or enforcement, substandard operations continue to put animals at risk.

You can change this. We are working to transform the broken systems that fuel animal suffering — so exploitation ends everywhere it hides. That means ending the treatment of wild animals as commodities, raising animal protection as a priority issue and changing mindsets so wild animals are recognized as sentient beings with the right to live free from harm.

✍️ Add your name to help us build the people power needed to make this the last generation of wild animals exploited for profit: https://bit.ly/42LNxWF

When enough of us demand change, governments and industries must act.

BREAKING: Updates on Marineland's animal transfers❗

While a dozen black bears have reportedly been transported from the Niagara Falls facility to an accredited and appropriate destination, hundreds of deer were reportedly sold and transferred to Brian Hart, a controversial Ontario exotic animal operator with a documented history of wildlife-related offences.

In 2011, Hart pled guilty to illegally importing three live kulans into Canada without permits. Yet, because Ontario still lacks a provincial zoo licensing system, Marineland was able to unilaterally pull off this opaque "fire sale" with little public transparency or independent scrutiny.

🚨The Government of Ontario must use its legal authority under the PAWS Act to intervene, engage technical experts and implement a mandatory provincial licensing system for all zoos and aquariums to prevent future Marineland-style failures.

Ontario has the weakest regulations in Canada when it comes to captive wildlife – anyone can operate a zoo without a licence or any qualifications or experience. Animals kept at roadside zoos typically live in enclosures much too small for their species with little more than some food and water, and if they are lucky – a wooden box to take shelter in. Lions, tigers, bears, primates and many other wild animals suffer in these barren environments with little enrichment or proper care. 🦁💔

But change is beginning to take shape. Across the province, municipalities are stepping up by adopting World Animal Protection’s resolution calling on the Ontario government to finally take responsibility for these captive wild animals through mandatory zoo licensing. When municipalities pass this resolution, it is forwarded to key government leaders – building pressure for long-overdue reform.

🚨 We need your help! Write to your Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) today and urge them to advocate for strong provincial action to end roadside zoos. Link in bio.

Parrots are wild animals. 🦜 Their journey to become pets is one of unimaginable suffering. Many of the parrots die in the cage after being shipped by plane - some from exhaustion and poor diet, while others suffocated and many had diseases that caught hold in the poor conditions and rapidly spread. 💔

Wild animals belong in the wild. We should only share our homes with domesticated animals who’ve evolved over thousands of years to be our companions, and whose needs can be completely met as pets. Don’t be part of the demand for this horrific parrot pet trade.

Roadside zoos across Canada are reopening this Victoria Day weekend. ⚠️ Behind the entertainment is a reality of systemic suffering and zero accountability. These animal entertainment facilities operate with little to no provincial oversight, putting both animals and the public at risk.

You have the power to stop the cycle. Don’t buy a ticket and share this to warn others before they support this suffering. Spread this far and wide please! 🦁
