VEMU

VEMU The objective of VEMU Estonian Museum Canada is to become the depository of the archives, printed materials, art and artifacts of the Estonian diaspora.

VEMU Estonian Museum Canada, located in Toronto, connects Canadian and Estonian communities through vibrant cultural programming, including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, theatre, concerts, and more, in both Estonian and English.

These items are kept and made available for the research and study of our history. The collaboration of the Estonian Studies Centre with the University of Toronto’s Chair of Estonian Studies and other Estonian organizations is shaping VEMU into a North-American centre of Estonian history and culture.

Lindau Sisters aka Lindau õed rose to stardom in the Estonian diaspora in Canada in the 70's and 80's. They were quickly performing all over North America, anywhere estos were gathering culminating with a tour in across Estonia in 1994. Hear how they got started with their musical journey. 🎶
And come back for part 2 to find out what it was like growing up as a performing family ansamble and how much sibling fighting was involved.

Olga Loitsenko , the latest guest on EstoCast, is on a mission. Well, a number of them actually, if you count hunting for coffee and employment, but above all she’s working to climb her way up as a comedian here in Canada. And the stakes are high, as this snippet of the new episode indicates.

In advance of her performances at VEMU Estonian Museum Canada on Saturday May 23rd (part of Doors Open Toronto), listen to the show to hear about:

😁 How her study of linguistics opened her up to many more potential misunderstandings

😁 Her observations of Australians versus Canadians

😁 Her reluctance to cross-country ski

😁 and much more!

Happy listening!

🎭 Laugh, reflect, connect — all in one place.

Join us for FREE Live Comedy at Doors Open Toronto on May 23 at Tartu College (3 Madison Ave.)! Featuring Olga Loitsenko (EE/CA) and Alex Kotsyk (UA/CA), this powerful program explores the Estonian language and how humour helps process the realities of war — with 3 free shows at 11 AM, 1 PM & 3 PM.

Here's what we're planning:

👉11:00 AM – “Learn Estonian with Olga”: an interactive comedy experience where Toronto comedians tackle Estonian with the hopes of making everybody laugh and learning some new vocabulary
👉1:00 PM – “Healing with Laughter”: a panel discussion exploring how comedy can help process trauma and build resilience with special guest Alex Kotsyk, who will share the stories of Ukrainians and how his improv and stand-up lessons have helped the Ukrainian community process and live with the war trauma
👉3:00 PM – Stand-up Comedy Set: a high-energy showcase of sharp wit, linguistic ability and cultural storytelling where Toronto comedians will show off their Estonian knowledge and comedy skills

Plus: experience Unissued Diplomas, a moving exhibit honouring Ukrainian students lost in the war. Come for the laughs, stay for the meaning ❤️
