The Association for Opera in Canada mourns the passing of Dame Felicity Lott, one of the most beloved and distinguished sopranos of her generation.

We also honour Dame Felicity’s meaningful connection to Canada through her involvement with the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM), where she generously shared her expertise and artistry with emerging singers in both 2018 and 2025. Her presence at CMIM reflected her deep commitment to mentorship and to nurturing the next generation of operatic talent.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, students, and admirers across the global opera community.

The Association for Opera in Canada shares in the grief and shock at the sudden passing of Cris Derksen, an extraordinary Cree cellist, composer, innovator, and advocate whose artistry transformed the landscape of Canadian classical music.

A Juno-nominated artist from North Tallcree Reserve in Treaty 8 territory, their work resonated on stages across Canada and around the world.
Cris was a tireless champion for equity and representation in the arts. Through founding the Indigenous Classical Gathering at Banff Centre, serving as Artistic Advisor to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and chairing the Equity Committee for Orchestras Canada, Cris opened doors for Indigenous and BIPOC artists and helped shape a more inclusive future for classical music in Canada.

The Association for Opera in Canada recognizes and honours Cris Derksen’s profound contribution to Canadian classical music and to the cultural life of this country. Their creativity, leadership, generosity, and vision will continue to inspire artists and audiences for generations to come.
We extend our deepest condolences to Cris’s family, loved ones, collaborators, and the many communities touched by their music and spirit.

We are pleased to announce the two Canadian participants selected to attend the OPERA America Leadership Intensive, taking place August 24–29: Dorian Cox, Director of the Ensemble Studio at the Canadian Opera Company, and Renée Fajardo, Education Manager at Gateway Theatre and Artistic Producer of Sound the Alarm.

Each year, the Association for Opera in Canada selects and sponsors two Canadian participants to attend the OPERA America Leadership Intensive. Dorian Cox and Renée Fajardo were selected by an independent jury from a competitive pool of 11 applicants.

They will join an international cohort of 18 participants, including 14 from the United States, two from Europe, and two from Latin America. The program will take place August 24–29, 2026, at the Doris Duke Foundation in New York City.

AOC’s Diffusion Sparks New Opportunities at Contact East!

Joel Klein, project manager for Diffusion , AOC’s national initiative connecting equity-deserving opera creators with Canada’s multidisciplinary presenter networks, was at Contact East (Atlantic Canada’s biennial performing arts booking conference) in Saint John this April to plant seeds: introduce presenters to what equity-deserving opera artists are making, and start building the relationships that lead to bookings down the road.

What he didn’t expect was how fast things would move. Presenters weren’t just politely curious, they were ready to act, and several did. Two new Atlantic dates were confirmed for Take This Waltz (Idan Cohen) within days of the conference, Inuit Connections (Deantha Edmunds) has fresh interest from multiple presenters now in active follow-up, and a major Halifax festival is exploring a role in the next Bijuriya (Gabriel Dharmoo) premiere. It turns out there’s a lot of appetite out there right now.

We’d like to shine a spotlight on artists participating in this year’s Diffusion program, sharing reflections on how the initiative has supported their work!

We extend our sincere thanks to the Ontario Arts Council for their generous support of the Association for Opera in Canada.

Their commitment to the arts empowers us to continue our work supporting, strengthening, and advocating for opera across the province. Thanks to their investment, we are able to champion artists, connect communities, and ensure that opera remains a vibrant and essential part of Ontario’s cultural landscape.

We are deeply grateful for their partnership and shared belief in the power of the arts.
