Opportunity Rising, an initiative led by FINCA Canada and backed by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, is creating new pathways to economic opportunity for young people in Tanzania and Uganda.

Recently, the FINCA Canada team traveled to Tanzania to meet with youth groups in rural areas, listening firsthand to their experiences, aspirations, and the challenges they face in building sustainable livelihoods. These conversations reinforced the importance of ensuring young people have access to the tools they need to succeed.

Over the next five years, 50,000 youth will gain access to financial services, mentorship, and vocational training through Opportunity Rising, designed to help them start, grow, and sustain their own enterprises.

For more than two decades, FINCA RD Congo has worked alongside communities to expand access to financial services that help people build a pathway out of poverty. When conflict escalated in the country’s east in January 2025, FINCA DRC’s eastern branches closed overnight and faced the real possibility of tens of thousands of clients losing access to their funds entirely.

However, as a result of FINCA DRC’s investment in digital infrastructure, agent banking, financial literacy, and women’s financial inclusion—clients still accessed funds, transacted through agents, and restructured loans digitally.

This serves as a crucial reminder that resilience in fragile markets is built long before crisis hits. Patient capital and gender-intentional investment are not peripheral strategies; they are foundational to financial institutions so they can withstand shocks and continue serving communities when it matters most.

49% of our women customers are the main earners in their households. These women are simultaneously running businesses, managing household budgets, covering school fees, navigating healthcare costs, and ensuring food security for their families.

At FINCA Canada, we understand that supporting women means looking beyond a single loan. When women gain the tools to strengthen their financial stability, the impact extends far beyond one person—it uplifts families, strengthens communities, and creates lasting change.

Our latest article explores the challenges our women customers face and what we're doing to help address them. Read the full article: https://bit.ly/4dkbhrq

In honor of , we wanted to take the opportunity to remind people how crucial it is to invest in women.

Across the world, women are powerful drivers of change. When women have access to education, resources, and economic opportunity, the impact goes far beyond the individual—families are healthier, children stay in school longer, and communities become more resilient.

That means investing in women doesn’t just change one life—it creates a ripple effect that’s transformative in building pathways out of poverty for all

Women are a driving force against poverty. It has been proven time and again that when women are empowered, their communities, families, and entire economies are uplifted as well. Despite this, the gender financing gap still stands at $1.7 trillion.

In honor of International Women’s Day, join FINCA Canada Executive Director Lindsay Wallace, FINCA Ventures Managing Director Winnie Mwangi, FINCA Global Product Management Consultant Karijutu Nadjiru, and FINCA RD Congo Deputy CEO Sibia Ngayihembako at our upcoming webinar, Women at the Center: How FINCA Advances Women’s Economic Empowerment Across the Impact Ecosystem.

From inclusive finance to impact investing, the panel will discuss how we’re designing, delivering, and investing in solutions that strengthen women’s financial resilience, support women-led businesses, and unlock opportunity for women around the world.

International Development Week underscored the importance of collaboration across agriculture, finance, and development.

At the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Farm Radio International - Radios Rurales Internationales event hosted by the University of Guelph, FINCA Canada Executive Director Lindsay Wallace joined a powerful panel where Canadian and international perspectives came together to explore how advisory services can be modernized and how stronger links between farmers, markets, and finance can unlock opportunity.

The theme of collaboration continued with the CAFIID, Ontario Council for International Cooperation, and Rooftops Canada community, where partners from across the country connected around mobilizing capital, knowledge, and partnerships for global impact.

Across both conversations, the message was clear: no single actor can drive impact alone. Lasting impact is built when cross-sector actors come together with a shared commitment to collaboration and advancing inclusive and sustainable change.

Smallholder farmers produce ⅓ of the world’s food yet form a large portion of the global population who live on less than $2 a day, often facing food insecurity themselves.

Since the beginning, FINCA Canada has been committed to uplifting smallholder farmers. To support our clients, FINCA subsidiaries around the world provide a suite of services including agricultural loans, financial education, and agricultural tips to better serve the unique needs of smallholder farmers.

According to FINCA Armenia client Siran Galeyan, “FINCA has been instrumental in securing an agricultural loan. This has proven particularly beneficial for our livestock, providing a crucial lifeline during difficult times when financial resources are limited, and enabling us to meet essential needs. In moments of need, it feels like a helping hand, and it's beneficial.”

FINCA has been creating opportunities for people like Robert since 1984.

Robert started with no land, limited money, and only five cows. However, through FINCA Uganda’s support and Robert’s determination, he obtained 70 cattle, a 50-acre farm, and is finally able to take care of his family.

“The business is helping me build a better future. FINCA is part of that success.”

Unfortunately, 1.7 billion people are still financially excluded. That’s why FINCA continues its efforts to serve low-income communities and families around the world, so they too can create a brighter future just like Robert.
