May is Physiotherapy Month 💙💚🩷
This month, we are celebrating and thanking our incredible Kootenay Kids physiotherapist, Kim, for the expertise, compassion, and dedication she brings to children and families every day.
Pediatric physiotherapy in the early years is so much more than movement. It can support children with:
👣 Gross motor development (rolling, sitting, crawling, walking)
⚖️ Balance, strength, coordination, and motor planning
🧠 Neuromotor and developmental differences
🫁 Respiratory and airway support
🧍 Posture, alignment, and movement patterns
🤝 Participation in play, family routines, and everyday life
Behind every milestone is relationship, clinical skill, problem-solving, and partnership with families.
Thank you, Kim, for helping children build confidence, develop skills, and thrive in the ways that matter most to them and their families. We are so grateful to have you as part of Kootenay Kids. 💙

Congratulations to our West Kootenay CCRR Coordinator, Samantha Zaystoff, on receiving the 2026 Gayle Davies Award at the Early Childhood Educators of BC Annual Conference!

The Gayle Davies Award is symbolized by a bald eagle, chosen by the ECEBC Board to represent the qualities of peace, power, friendship, and vision. These qualities reflect the award’s recognition of excellence in caring and celebrate individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the field of early childhood education.

Sam is such a bright and caring presence at Kootenay Kids Society. She has made a lasting impact through her work as an educator, through the Child Care Resource and Referral program, and now as she steps into her new role as Family Services Coordinator. Anyone who has connected with Sam through professional development opportunities, the resource library, or community events has experienced the way she embodies peace, power, friendship, and vision in all she does. She has a remarkable ability to make people feel seen in everyday moments and consistently goes above and beyond for our community.

We also want to celebrate Tracy Barkman, recipient of the 2025 Gayle Davies Award. Tracy and Sam have worked closely together for many years, supporting educators and building a strong sense of community within the early years. We are so grateful for the work Tracy does with our KKS child care centres through the Early Childhood Pedagogy Network BC

Congratulations, Tracy and Sam, and thank you for all you do for our early years community! You have both left lasting imprints on the educators, families, and programs fortunate enough to cross your paths.

We love seeing research reflect what communities and service providers have long known to be true.

A big thank you to our incredible Physical Therapist, Kim, for bringing this new Harvard Center on the Developing Child working paper to our attention: From Resources to Routines: The Importance of Stability in the Developmental Environment.

The paper highlights something we see every day at Kootenay Kids Society: stability matters deeply for children’s development and well-being. Predictable routines, responsive relationships, food security, housing, and access to supportive services all help create the conditions children need to thrive.

At KKS, we are proud to help bridge research and practice by grounding our work in both evidence and the real lives of children and families in our communities.

Thank you, Kim, for helping us stay connected to emerging research and for the care you bring to children and families every day.
