As they rang in the new millennium, Erin Bruce and Patrick McInnis had to make a choice: move back to the Coast to find work in catering, or launch their own business right here in Nelson. They took a leap of faith and opened Alligator Pie Catering that same year.
With their many years of experience working in restaurants and catering companies, the pair knew their craft. What they weren’t so sure about was how to start a business. That’s why they reached out to Community Futures Central Kootenay for help.
They received support and guidance from several of our now-retired staff members.
“We heard that there was an opportunity to get some assistance with starting a new business,” Erin says. “We received a ton of help from Sharon Swann with starting our webpage, and we had a really great mentor in Bruce Lacroix, he helped guide us with his own experience of being self-employed.”
26 years later, Alligator Pie Catering is thriving. Erin and Pat cater office lunches and dinners, celebrations, holiday parties and more right here in the West Kootenay. They also offer an extensive rotating single-serve freezer meal menu.
“The relationships we’ve developed over many years with our regular and repeat customers have been crucial to our success,” Erin explains.
The duo’s favourite part about having their own catering business? The creative freedom it provides them.
“We love being able to craft our menus depending on what food we are currently inspired or curious about,” Erin says. “We love having complete creative control.”
The couple attributes their success and longevity to perseverance but, over the years, they have learned a thing or two about how to make a business flourish, even at the worst time.
“Be comfortable with adaptability. Anyone running a business during COVID can attest to this,” Erin explains.
