Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society

Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society We are a community of lake stewards working to improve the health and stewardship of Kootenay Lake.

Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS) creates space for lake communities to share information, collaborate, and learn about Kootenay Lake. FoKLSS holds workshops, monitors indicators of lake health, leads cleanup initiatives, restores and enhances wildlife habitat, and assists community members in developing and implementing ideas to improve or protect the lake. FOKLSS also helps r

esidents to participate in a planning initiative to improve lake management being led by an inter-governmental initiative called the Kootenay Lake Partnership (KLP). The KLP is developing a lake management plan that will harmonize regulation, improve enforcement, and promote protection of the lake. The Friends of Kootenay Lake serves as a citizen advisory council for this planning initiative.

We are so excited to welcome our new Program Coordinator, Ezra Creasy! ๐Ÿ‘‹ ๐Ÿธ ๐Ÿ’ง

Ezra grew up in a small town outside of Ottawa, ON, on the unceded traditional territories of the Anishnaabe Algonquin peoples. As a kid, they were lucky to spend lots of time in the summer backcountry canoe camping in Algonquin Provincial Park, especially on and around Grand Lake.

Ezraโ€™s lifelong fascination with all living beings and deep curiosity about the world around them led them to pursue a double major BSc Honours in Forest Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. They graduated in 2024, spent some time running their own ecologically-based landscaping business and backpacking, then moved to the beautiful West Kootenays to kickstart their career as a biologist.

Their passions lie in ecology, stewardship, applied research, science communication, and community-building, so this role with the incredible FoKLSS team feels like a perfect fit. They are inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers and canโ€™t wait to meet more of you in the near future.

Please join us in welcoming Ezra to the team! ๐Ÿ’“

We'll be meeting at the Harrop Wetlands trailhead - located at 6375 Erindale Rd, Harrop, BC - from 10-12 pm. Don't forget to wear closed-toed shoes, pack your go-to planting tool and water, and dress for the weather (bring layers)!

We will be providing gardening gloves, some tools, snacks/drinks, plants/seeds, and an engaging, hands-on experience. You'll be sure to leave with more knowledge about plants and pollinators!

Bring your friends, and please rideshare if possible! You can contact [email protected] if youโ€™d like assistance setting one up.
