Our kindergarten children have been busy getting ready for our upcoming Harvest Dinner, which will be our first family event of the school year! We began by washing and drying our pumpkins, using our senses to explore their unique textures and features. We talked about how the pumpkins felt when they were wet and dry, noticing their shapes, sizes, colours, and bumpy stems. Then, we added our own colourful fingerprints using paint to make each pumpkin special! These pumpkins will become part of the centrepieces for our Harvest Dinner, making this project even more meaningful.

🐴🐐 A Day Full of Animal Fun! 🐰🐓

Today, our children enjoyed meeting a mini horse, dog, donkey, chickens, bunny, goats, and sheep! They loved exploring, learning, and interacting with these wonderful animals. 🐶🐑💛

A huge thank you to one of our amazing daycare families for sharing their lifestyle with us and helping foster a strong sense of community. We are so grateful for opportunities like these that bring learning to life! ❤️🌿

We wanted to try a new activity with our friends. We provocated the materials and invited the children to join. Initially, they were unsure but as we encouraged and modelled the actions, they picked up. According to John Dewey, “Children learn by doing,” participating along side with them encouraged them to persist in play.
Clips were added to the cotton balls so it was easier for the children to grasp. To encourage participation and further exploration, we would use the hand over hand method to show the movement of materials. The children would gently lift the clips and set them down creating a blob of colour. They were able to visually see the cause and effect of their actions. The change in velocity increased as the children realized they were making splash marks when they pushed the cotton ball quickly. They tried moving the sponge from side to side as well as up and down. The children noticed the colours as they looked at their splash then looked at their sponge. A couple of the children would touch two sponges together. Some children showed their curiosity as they wanted to smell and taste the colours. Near the end of the activity some friends were curious to try to squeeze the sponge in their hands.
This age appropriate activity (12-19 months) provided an avenue for the children to build fine motor skills, pincer grip, hand eye coordination, and intellectual abilities. When reflecting through Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning Framework, we noted two Dispositions to Learn. Playing and Playfulness was observed when they were being creative and using their imagination. The children were testing theories on how they would use the materials and making choices of which colours they want to use. The children are Seeking when they are wondering and curious about the materials, and exploring the activity with their senses. Next time, we will have bins for the children to dip their cotton balls themselves. We will continue to provide opportunities for children to learn more about the properties of objects and moments of wonder. 😃

Last week, the children in the Inventor Room had the opportunity to shuck Taber corn cobs for the daycare community to enjoy during lunch. This hands-on experience provided the children with an opportunity to explore a corn cob in its natural form, including the husks, and develop an understanding of what corn looks like as it grows in local fields.

As the children carefully removed each layer of husk, they eagerly searched for the yellow kernels inside. When they finally discovered the corn, several children excitedly referred to it as “gold.” Their curiosity and enthusiasm demonstrated their growing understanding of where food comes from and how it changes from a crop in the field to food we enjoy.

The Alberta Early Learning and Care Framework, Flight, recognizes that children can develop knowledge about food and nutrition through active participation in food preparation. By helping to prepare the corn, the children were able to engage in a meaningful, hands-on learning experience while learning about corn as an important agricultural product of southern Alberta. This experience connected the children to their local community and environment while encouraging curiosity, exploration, and an appreciation for where their food comes from.

Today, the children explored a playful sensory activity with shaving foam on a tuff tray. We added different colours for them to explore with hands first and then gave them to drive cars through the foam, producing tracks and colourful patterns. Their excitement was clear as they investigated varied textures and observed how colours blended.

Next, we added a little water and later introduced sand, letting the children watch shifts in texture and consistency. They enjoyed experimenting, making discoveries, and using their imagination while guiding cars through the materials.

Through this open-ended experience, children showed curiosity, creativity, and wonder while exploring their surroundings. They built fine-motor skills, sensory awareness, problem-solving, and an understanding of cause and effect. Through FLIGHT the children are able to voice thier preferences and opinions while exploring what it means to be a community member.

The toddlers have been showing a lot of interest in transportation, we took the opportunity to incorporate that into an art activity. Creating activities that align with the children’s interests is a great way for children to explore and learn while demonstrate their knowledge (Flight, P. 64).

As the children engage in the activity they are using the disposition of playing and playful by creating, imagining and testing theories. Some watch closely as the tracks show on their paper, while others make engine sounds and lift the truck high in the air.
