New West Theatre From humble beginnings and ambitious dreams, New West Theatre has been entertaining Southern Alberta audiences since 1990!

✈ Meet Hank, a fiercely independent WWII veteran who refuses to let a nursing home decide how he should live, brought to life by the wonderful Terry Gunvordahl.

Grumpy, funny, stubborn, and carrying more than he lets on, Hank has been labelled a “flight risk” after walking away from the nursing home. But when nursing student Sarah is assigned to care for him, an unlikely friendship begins to take shape.

As Hank and Sarah slowly open up to each other, the reasons behind Hank’s need to escape begin to emerge, revealing a story about memory, courage, loss, and the complicated meaning of being “safe.”

✈ Meet Kathleen, the dedicated nursing supervisor at the heart of Flight Risk, brought to life by the amazing Erica Hunt.

Responsible for the residents of Ponderosa Pine Lodge, Kathleen believes in doing things the right way and keeping everyone safe. But when Hank, a 99-year-old WWII veteran, challenges the rules meant to protect him, Kathleen is forced to confront a difficult question: when does keeping someone safe mean taking away their freedom?

Set against the complicated realities of aging, memory, and the lasting weight of war, Flight Risk is a moving and unexpectedly funny story about dignity, connection, and what it really means to live well.

✈ Meet the characters of Flight Risk!

Hank Dunfield is about to turn 100 and is not too happy about the prospect. A tail gunner in the RCAF during WWII, he has lost friends and now he has lost his autonomy. Life, according to Hank, is “all just flying in the dark, hoping you won’t get hit.”

Bonding over a model Lancaster bomber, and a love of good coffee, an unexpected friendship develops between Hank and Sarah, a young student nurse. They are a tired man at the end of his journey and a young nurse just beginning hers, each trying to help the other cope with life.

Flight Risk is a story of a deep and out-of-the-blue friendship, scattered with humour as well as melancholy. It is ultimately a triumph of turning helplessness into liberation.
