🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: HARRISON 🚨

It’s been almost two years since Harrison started working for Lethbridge Fire & EMS.

Taking care of people has always been at the heart of why he pursued this career. Growing up, he took care of his mum while she battled breast cancer. “Once she recovered, I knew I wanted to help look after others.”

A call that has stuck with Harrison involves one particular man’s dying moment. “As this man was passing away, we spoke about his life, his family, and accomplishments.”

“Palliative calls are very tender for me and should be very profound. There’s lots to learn from our elders. To ask someone about their proudest moments and biggest accomplishment and watch their eyes light up as they retrace their life has always been a great privilege.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: DANIEL 🚨

Daniel has been a medic for five years and a firefighter paramedic for three.

His favourite part of the job is his interactions with the public: “Whether it’s a kid on the side of the road excitedly waving at the truck or an elementary school tour, those moments stick with you.”

One call that has stuck with Daniel was when he responded to a patient who had become critically ill and required immediate intervention – the man, who was Daniel’s age – had been running an ultramarathon in the coulees.

Seamless coordination between Fire and EMS divisions allowed teams to get the man the help he needed: “We activated the UTV to reach the patient quickly, began lifesaving measures immediately, and got him to the ambulance as fast as possible when every second mattered. It reinforced how important teamwork and integrated emergency response are to our community.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: JOHN 🚨

John has spent almost a decade in EMS, with four of those years with the Lethbridge service.

One of his favourite things about the job is the like-minded conversations that happen when you work with a partner who is also an Advanced Care Paramedic and are assisted by an Advanced Lifesaving engine – those conversations ensure above-standard care.

Every Lethbridge Firefighter Paramedic can handle both the rescue environment and medical care needed at any scene: this helps provide fast and more effective treatment to patients.

“With everyone trained the same, it allows for continuity across the board with no communication or skill gaps. It improves teamwork and scene efficiency meaning teams can adapt quickly and manage the incident collaboratively. Most importantly, and from a first hand point of view, I'd say it improves outcomes for the public.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: JAYDEN 🚨

Jayden has been a firefighter paramedic for four years.

For him, being a firefighter paramedic means being the calm presence on someone’s worst day or in a moment of chaos. He loves the purpose this job gives him and that “Every day is different, every moment relies on our crew to work together and make a positive impact in somebody’s life.”

Jayden says being a firefighter paramedic means being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s more than a job – “You train together, struggle together, trust each other with your lives, and show up for complete strangers on their worst days. There’s a bond in that kind of work that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: DOROTHY 🚨

Dorothy has been a firefighter paramedic for two years.

For Dorothy, having both firefighting and advanced lifesaving training means the difference between life or death: “The more highly trained personnel who can help me keep a person’s heart pumping oxygenated blood to their brain and other organs, the better! When our High Performance CPR takes place, we know our roles like a pit crew. We know the steps like a script. This practice and precision saves hearts, brains, and lives.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: NOLAN 🚨

Nolan has been a firefighter paramedic for three years.

For him, having both advanced lifesaving and fire training means that continuity of care does not end at any one provider. “Every provider on scene is able to provide the highest acuity of patient care and give the patient the greatest chance for a positive outcome.”

A call that has stuck with Nolan is one where he and his paramedic instructors responded to a mother and her newborn baby, who needed to be resuscitated. Multiple teams worked on both mother and child and were able to bring the baby back to life and transported to hospital. “If it weren’t for my highly trained Paramedic preceptors, as well as the other multiple hands on scene from the fire engine and the other ambulance caring for the mother, the outcome would have very likely gone the other way.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: ANDREW 🚨

Andrew has been a firefighter paramedic for a decade. For him, being a firefighter paramedic gives him the skills, knowledge, and opportunity to serve his community to the best of his ability, while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives during their most difficult moments.

The call that has stayed with Andrew the most is one where he was tasked with transporting a patient from Raymond to Alberta Children’s Hospital: a boy around eight years old who had previously beaten cancer, only to learn it had returned.

“During the transport, there were no urgent treatments to perform and no medications to administer, so all that was left to do was talk. Throughout the drive, I watched in amazement as this young boy displayed incredible courage, resilience, and an overwhelmingly positive outlook. Despite what he was facing, he recognized that his mother was struggling and took the time to comfort her with kindness and reassurance. I was deeply moved by his selflessness and compassion during a situation that would overwhelm even the strongest person. Personally, I felt helpless knowing there was nothing definitive I could do to change his circumstances. Yet somehow, without directly saying it, he made me feel that simply being there mattered.”

“During the transport, he began showing me his favorite videos on YouTube, and I had the privilege of getting to know him, even if only for a short time. He likely has no idea how much that interaction impacted me, but he gave me far more than I could ever have given him.
I never learned the outcome of his story, but I still think about him often.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: DYLAN 🚨

Dylan has been a firefighter paramedic with Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services for more than three years.

Coming from a family of healthcare practitioners, joining LFES has been a goal of his since 2014. For Dylan, it’s an honour to hold two very important roles – being a firefighter and a paramedic – in the community.

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: ROBERT 🚨

Robert got into this career a decade ago and became a paramedic in 2019.

He says having an integrated service means, “We train intensely as a team to ensure our community is receiving the highest level of care.”

A call that he remembers is responding to a young patient who went into cardiac arrest while playing sports – a situation where the integrated team’s training played a crucial role in the patient’s outcome: “When the fire engine arrived as backup, they immediately knew what to do, what life-saving roles need to be filled, what medications to draw up, providing an additional 20+ years of valuable medical experience.”

🚨 MEET YOUR LETHBRIDGE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC: BILLY 🚨

Billy has been a primary care paramedic for five years and has been with Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services for two years.

A Lethbridge native, his uncle Al Roundtree was a former captain with LFES: “He had millions of stories and great things to say about working for LFES for his career and I wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

There are many things Billy loves about the job, including having the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life for the better, the teamwork involved in big EMS and fire calls, and how each member brings different strengths working towards the same goal.
