Disability Employment Awareness Month – Meet James with Canine Vision Dog Guide, Bob

For James, a Registered Massage Therapist, independence means being able to show up for his patients, navigate his community and feel confident in new surroundings, with Bob by his side.

Recently, James and his family relocated four and a half hours away from the community they had called home for 10 years. Suddenly, everything was new: the physical surroundings, social connections and his route to work.

But Bob adapted quickly. Within just three days, he had learned James’s new route to work and could guide him there without any directional cues. He also quickly learned their regular stops at the grocery store and his favourite spots in the park for some downtime.

And Bob does more than help James get from point A to point B. With his big brown eyes and tendency to smile at everyone they meet, Bob helps create connections and encourages James to be more social – whether he’s welcoming patients at work or simply out and about in his new community.

One rainy evening, James finished work around 8:30 p.m. and faced a long journey home through poorly lit roads, construction, puddles and flooded trails. With Bob beside him, they navigated it all together and arrived home safely.

Because for people with disabilities, having the right support can make all the difference — helping make getting to work, navigating the workplace and pursuing a career with confidence possible. For James, that support has four paws and a name: Bob. ❤️

Happy Halloween from all of us at Lethbridge Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides!

Some Great Tips below from Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides !

Before any tricking or treating gets underway, here are a few Halloween safety measures to keep all your pups safe and happy:

1. Keep all sweet treats out of the reach of excited paws and mouths – except for liver treats of course! Especially anything with chocolate, xylitol or theobromine (like gum)

2. Make sure any pup costumes are comfortable and excited teeth aren’t able to bite or chew anything off

3. Keep an eye out for new and exciting things your dog might find on the ground while trick or treating

4. Create a safe, comfy space for you pup while feeding hungry trick or treaters

This month is an opportunity to recognize the barriers people with disabilities can face when seeking and maintaining employment, and to encourage employers, workplaces and communities to create more inclusive environments where everyone can participate and thrive.

For many people with disabilities, a Dog Guide can help make greater independence at work and in everyday life possible. These incredible partners provide greater access to participation, opportunities, and independence in the workplace.

Because a disability shouldn’t stand in the way of what you want to achieve.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing the stories of some of our clients and the difference their Dog Guide partners have made in their careers, workplaces and lives.

Follow along, learn from their experiences and join us in building more inclusive workplaces for everyone.

From helping someone navigate the world with confidence to providing support, independence and comfort, our Dog Guides are trained to meet a wide range of needs.
Our seven programs are: Canine Vision, Hearing, Service, Seizure Response, Diabetes Alert, Autism Assistance, Facility Support
