Generative Artificial Intelligence may have benefits and legitimate uses. However there are also significant risks with utilizing generative AI (e.g. chatbots) for mental health support and su***de prevention. These risks include: chatbots not recognizing su***de risk appropriately, lack of safety protocols, and chatbots sharing incorrect resources to those in distress. These risks may impact youth and young people especially.

To help manage these risks, four recommendations can be adopted and followed. Visit wrspc.ca/blog/ to read more about the risks and recommendations for generative AI in su***de prevention.

Help-seeking behaviours are important for su***de prevention. There may be barriers to seeking help but asking directly about su***de can support conversations and reduce some barriers for those who may be struggling.

We continue to bust this myth that by asking about su***de directly with someone may plant ideas because in reality, starting a conversation and asking someone who might be struggling or that you’re concerned about directly if they are thinking of su***de can actually open up the conversation and build some trust between you.

Did you know that understanding what protective factors are can contribute to su***de prevention? The more we know, the better understanding we have to start conversations and support ourselves and others.

Today, Jenny, one of our Program Coordinators, talks a bit more about what protective factors are and discusses some examples. They can be individual, community or societal protective factors.

Happy World Mental Health Day. Every year on October 10th, we continue our conversation around mental health and the ongoing support our community may need.

This year, the theme is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” highlighting the importance of the community and their voices, and how the policies, services, and decisions in our world and local communities can impact and affect these voices.

As part of our work in su***de prevention, we always say how much of a positive impact community-based and person-centred support can be. We can continue listening to the lived experiences of our community and we can also bring those stories to our actions in the community by starting conversations, sharing resources, and connecting each other to help.
