A Thanksgiving Lesson We Don’t Want Our Kids to Miss
Sometimes, the greatest gift of a journey is discovering just how much we already have—and how much we still have to learn.
As Canadian families gather around the table this Thanksgiving weekend, we’re reminded of the importance of gratitude. But how do we help our children move beyond simply saying “thank you” to truly recognizing the blessings in their lives?
At NEXO, we believe some of the most meaningful lessons happen when families step outside their familiar world and experience life alongside others.
That’s part of the heart behind our IMPACT VACATIONS.
When children travel with their parents to communities in the Dominican Republic, they begin to see the world through a different lens. They encounter families whose everyday challenges may look very different from their own. They begin to understand that access to food, education, and other everyday necessities cannot be taken for granted by everyone.
And somewhere along the way, gratitude begins to grow—not because someone tells them how fortunate they are, but because relationships and experiences help them see it for themselves.
But there’s another lesson that often leaves an even deeper impression.
In communities where life can be incredibly challenging, our families encounter something beautiful: the natural, contagious joy of people whose faith remains alive and whose hope is rooted in Jesus.
Their generosity, hospitality, laughter, worship, and genuine love for others can challenge our assumptions about what it means to live a blessed life.
We arrive thinking about what we might bring. We leave discovering how much we have received.
Our children learn gratitude. Our families grow in compassion. And all of us are reminded that joy is not simply the product of comfortable circumstances, but can flourish through faith, community, and a deep trust in God.
This is the beauty of going on mission together. We don't travel as experts with all the answers. We go as humble learners, ready to listen, build friendships, serve with God's love alongside national leaders, and allow God to transform us, as well.
This Thanksgiving, may our gratitude go beyond what fills our tables to include the people who expand our hearts, and keep us aligned with God's mission.
And may we teach our children not only to appreciate what they have, but to recognize the dignity, faith, resilience, and joy of those whose lives look different than ours.
Because sometimes, when we step into someone else's world, we discover a little more of what it means to live, what matters the most and true roots of happiness.
This is NEXO. This is IMPACT VACATION. And this is why we believe that when we're on mission together, it's better, and especially with our children and the next generation
