The Day of the Apology is observed on June 11th to mark the anniversary of the 2008 Canadian government apology for the residential school system and the generational impact it had on students and their descendants.

This date is specifically dedicated to honouring survivors, remembering the children affected by the schools, and reflecting the truth-telling and healing process.

Did you know that Cape Dorset in Nunavut is known as the “Capital of Inuit Art”?

With 1 in 5 workers there employed in the arts, Cape Dorset is the destination for viewing beautiful Indigenous art from all mediums, from prints to Appliquéd designs on hide garments and bags.

Throughout June, True North Aid will be posting fun facts about Indigenous culture, terminology, and history to honour Indigenous History Month.

True North Aid has been in collaboration with Strong Nations since 2023, and today we want to say a huge THANK YOU for almost three years of friendship.

During that time, we have been able to positively impact and change the lives of young readers in Indigenous communities from coast to coast.

In 2025, we were able to deliver 2966 books to Indigenous children in northern and remote communities.

The ability for Indigenous children to see themselves reflected in learning materials allows them to learn, share, and connect to their culture, which is essential for shaping beliefs and nurturing young minds.

Thank you to Strong Nations for such an impactful 3 years, we look forward to many more to come, and to continue making an impact on Indigenous youth.

June 6th is Blue Jean Jacket Day.

Blue Jean Jacket day invites everybody to support and to spread awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous boys and men by wearing a blue jean jacket.

This initiative was started fairly recently on June 6th, 2023 to honour Indigenous men and boys that have been exploited, murdered, or gone missing.

According to Statistics Canada, Indigenous men accounted for more than 80% of the 201 Indigenous people who died by homicide in 2020, Blue Jean Jacket Day was started in Edmonton in 2023 to raise awareness about this violence.
