Building Spaces for Healing: Sagamok First Nation

Through the Work 2 Give (W2G) program, meaningful change is built by hand and rooted in community.

In partnership with Movember and Correctional Service Canada, W2G provides opportunities for incarcerated Indigenous men in Ontario to develop valuable skills while giving back to their communities.

One of these projects is a gazebo for Sagamok First Nation, which will serve as a space for restorative justice practices, bringing people together to support healing, accountability, and connection.

With True North Aid helping connect community needs with meaningful projects, this partnership demonstrates how community-led initiatives can create tangible, lasting benefits.

For many northern and remote Indigenous communities, the impact of this year's wildfire extends far beyond the fires themselves.

From the uncertainty of evacuation, to the challenges of returning home, and the reality of homes lost, True North Aid has been working alongside community leadership to provide support where it's needed most.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we've been able to :
~ Provide educational supplies so displaced students could begin the school year in their temporary communities
~ Support recreational activities for children and youth, creating opportunities for connection, play, and a sense of normalcy during displacement
~ Deliver essential supplies, including food, clothing, hygiene products, and medical supplies
~ Help transport personal belongings back home as communities were able to return
~ Support recovery efforts by replacing home furnishings lost to the wildfires

While many families have returned home, the journey to recovery continues.

To everyone who supported our wildfire response, thank you. Your generosity has helped us to respond to immediate needs, support families during displacement, and now assist communities as they rebuild.

Our commitment didn't end when the fires went out. We will continue to walk alongside northern and remote Indigenous communities as they recover, rebuild and move forward.

It goes without saying how important education is for youth; the skills they learn in school that are rooted in their culture, their history and their identity allow them to go on to create and shape the world they're growing into, confident in themselves and their minds.

Summer Fun with Jordan’s Principle!

As part of True North Aid’s Community Initiatives Program (CIP), the Jordan’s Principle Summer Program provided 16 children with six weeks of free summer fun, learning and adventure!

From whale watching and boat rides to swimming, bowling, baking, arts and crafts, bannock making and learning Cree words, the program offered exciting opportunities for children to connect, explore and make lasting summer memories close to home.

The program wrapped up with a celebration filled with food, laughter and fun!

We’re grateful to see the positive impact of community-led initiatives that create meaningful experiences for children and families.

We’re excited to announce that Simcoe County Exchanges (SCE) is now a project of True North Aid. 💙

For nearly 25 years, Aubrey Hawton has been bringing young people together through student and cultural exchanges, creating opportunities to travel, learn, listen, share stories and build meaningful connections.

What began with a passion for helping students experience French beyond the classroom has grown into a long-standing commitment to cultural exchange between Indigenous youth from across the north, including Nunavik, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon and non-Indigenous youth from the Simcoe County area in southern Ontario.

We’re honoured to welcome Aubrey and Simcoe County Exchanges to the True North Aid community, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.

A new school year is a fresh start, and having the right supplies can help students feel prepared and ready to learn.

Through the Back to School program, students in Mushuau Innu Natuashish School received backpacks filled with the supplies they need for the year ahead. We’re grateful to everyone who helped make sure students in Natuashish could head back to school feeling supported and prepared.

Today, we recognize the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+).

This day is an opportunity to honour those who are missing or have been murdered, stand with their families and communities, and bring attention to the ongoing crisis of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people.

The 231 Calls for Justice released by the National Inquiry in 2019 outline the systemic changes needed to address this crisis and support the safety, rights, and well-being of Indigenous Peoples. Yet, meaningful action and accountability remain essential.

We all have a role to play. Learn about the Calls for Justice, listen to Indigenous voices and families, support Indigenous-led organizations, and participate in local events and vigils.

Remembering is important, but lasting change requires action. Together, we must continue working toward a future where Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people can live safely, with dignity and respect.
