In May 2016, only a month after losing her sister Joyce to the same disease, Colleen was diagnosed with lung cancer for the first time. After surgery to remove a tumour, she went into remission and moved forward with life, carrying both the grief of her sister’s loss and the determination to live fully. 💙

Seven years later, this time just two days after opening her own pub, the cancer was back. What followed was treatment at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, incredible community support with fundraisers to help her small business, and top-notch health care during her cancer journey. In November 2024, she got the incredible news that she’d beat cancer for the second time.

Colleen’s journey is the inspiration and namesake behind team "Colleen's Cuties"– led by 12-year rider Hugh Bray and made up of cancer survivors and riders supporting loved ones impacted by cancer. Reflecting on how far she’s come, Colleen shares: “2026 will mark 10 years since my sister, Joyce, lost her battle with lung cancer and two years since my own fight.”

Colleen is honoured to have a BMO Ride for Cancer team riding in her name and is finding meaningful ways to support them — including hosting an upcoming fundraiser at the pub, with more exciting details to come.

It's time for Ride Rewind! 🚲🔄️ Our 2018 BMO Ride for Cancer event saw a community of over 580 riders, 140 volunteers, sponsors, and supporters rally for local cancer care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, with riders travelling between 25 km and 160 km from Mahone Bay to Halifax.

Event day brought a full crowd to our opening ceremonies, a "We're Not Stopping" attitude from start to finish, and emotion, celebration and connection at our Finish Line. What an amazing day to come together to make a difference in our community!

Funds raised from the 2018 event helped build a state-of-the-art Cancer Therapy Prep Lab at the QEII. Today, between 120 and 150 lifesaving doses of chemotherapy and systemic are prepared each day for cancer patients receiving treatment at the QEII. And donor generosity, including from our BMO Ride community, is felt in every dose delivered to patients. 💙

As part of Elaine’s Legacy Riders, one of the top fundraising teams to-date for this year’s BMO Ride for Cancer, Sandy Savage rides in honour of her son Nicholas, her late friend Elaine, and Elaine’s daughter, Michelle. 🚲

At 27 years old, Nicholas, Sandy’s oldest son, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in March 2023. Elaine underwent cancer treatment at the same time. During this time, Elaine’s daughter, Michelle, was also diagnosed with cancer.

As Sandy readies for her first BMO Ride for Cancer, she reflects on the value of the QEII Cancer Centre, the services, the care teams, and the people who need these supports.

“The more we can do to give those caregivers tools in this fight, then every cent is worth considering donating,” says Sandy. 💙

To all the mothers and mother figures out there in our BMO Ride community, thank you. We wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all those who’ve strengthened, guided and nurtured us over the years. 💙

For many, mothers may be caregivers, our first doctors and nurses, and our best friends. Every mother deserves a day as special as they are. Cheers to the mothers who teach us love, and the importance of resilience. 💐

It’s time for Ride Rewind! 🚲🔄️ Our 2017 Ride for Cancer powered by BMO saw 475 riders, 200 volunteers, sponsors, event organizers and supporters come together to do something bigger for cancer care in our region.

On event day, participant journeys spanned 130 kms from Mahone Bay and finishing in Halifax. Funds raised in 2017 helped purchase innovative technology and equipment within the QEII’s new Cancer Therapy Preparation Lab, where critical treatments, like chemotherapy and immunotherapy, are prepared. Our 2017 year smashed fundraising goals, thanks to the rallying support of our surrounding community. What an exciting year! 💙👏
