Generous donors to the QEII Foundation’s palliative care trust fund allowed the palliative care team at the Victoria General site’s 12-bed inpatient unit to purchase an accessible whirlpool tub.

Carrie Edwards was admitted to the QEII’s inpatient palliative care unit on February 23 with late-stage pancreatic cancer. The whirlpool tub brought her peace and comfort prior to her passing in early April 2026.

For Carrie, the warm water and bubbles also soothed her bed sores and the inflammation in her legs and feet. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer four years ago and having undergone several rounds of treatment, Carrie was admitted to the palliative care unit after the extreme pain she experienced made living alone in her Dartmouth apartment unmanageable.

“It is just heavenly,” said Carrie. “Soaking in it makes me feel so good.” 💜

At the QEII Foundation's Innovation Den in April 2026, Dr. Nunes brought his latest research around ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression forward to a panel of esteemed judges. His pitch earned him the event's inaugural $75,000 People’s Choice Award, decided upon and funded by QEII Foundation donors.

The goal of Dr. Nunes’ research is to evaluate if and how sublingual ketamine therapy can be provided “for the right patient at the right time with the right monitoring guidelines.” 💜 Watch more:

In April 2026, the QEII's Dr. Abraham Nunes brought his latest research around ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression to the QEII Foundation’s Innovation Den stage, inspiring a jury — made up of Foundation donors — to award him the event’s inaugural $75,000 People’s Choice Award.

The funds will support his research into the effectiveness and safety of ketamine therapy for depression via a sublingual (under tongue) tablet.

“With funding, we can potentially save a lot of people's lives," says Dr. Nunes. "We can give hope to people who, when they are referred to me, genuinely feel like they have none. Our goal is to offer more options as time goes on for people that don't respond to what already exists.” 💜 Read more:

Carl Fraser is grateful for life-changing care after having a spinal cord tumour removed at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

In 2020, the diagnosis shocked him. He had already lost more than 75% of his function below the tumour, and waiting for care would mean possible catastrophic disability. Just weeks later, he underwent surgery.

Carl spent nearly 25 years as a parish priest, visiting patients and families at the QEII during difficult moments. He feels thankful to now have received care from the incredible providers he witnessed for so many years and now gives back monthly to the QEII Foundation in gratitude. đź’ś

Today, Carl is now able to take daily walks, a future that once seemed uncertain, and is back to work in a new role. Read his story:

Throughout his nearly 25 years as a parish priest, Carl Fraser visited many patients and families receiving care at QEII Health Sciences Centre, offering comfort during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.“I’ve had lots of opportunity to be in the QEII, to see people cared for on s...

75-year-old Stuart Lorriman from Head of St. Margaret's Bay is feeling great after a minimally invasive heart surgery at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. đź’ś

In December 2025, Stuart underwent a TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedure, with surgeons replacing his aortic valve through a small entry point in his groin, instead of entering through the chest.

He had the procedure in the morning. “By noon, they had me in the recovery room up on my feet walking around,” he explains.

“It’s amazing they could stick a heart valve in you by going through this little incision in your groin,” he says. “I couldn't believe it…it's just crazy. It's like science fiction.”

At age 75, Stuart Lorriman lives in Head of Saint Margaret’s Bay in Nova Scotia, where the rhythm of his life is shaped by the ocean, history, and a sense of connection. The rising demand for healthcare professionals has led to the exciting formation of the Nova Scotia International Community of Health Care Workers Engagement (NICHE), a program designed to facilitate a successful transition period for internationally educated healthcare workers entering our healthcare system.

Together with other provinces, Nova Scotia has been looking for ways in which care for Nova Scotians can evolve. Proudly supported by the QEII Foundation and led by Nova Scotia Health, NICHE seeks to support internationally educated healthcare workers and their families living across Nova Scotia who want to continue in their healthcare careers.

Through Scotiabank’s $500,000 donation to NICHE, as of April 2026 the program has helped support 899 internationally educated health professionals since its launch in May 2023.
