The primary purpose of AAD is to promote equal rights for Deaf Albertans while endeavoring to improve the quality of life for Deaf people in general.

Principles of Service: We strive to develop high quality and services in consultation with national, regional, provincial, and local consumer groups and individuals. To achieve our objectives, we attempt to deal with issues at the provincial level in the following areas:

Advocacy: We are committed to ensuring that the rights and personal or collective dignity of Deaf Albertans are respected. We advocate for empowerment. Accessibility: We are committed to supporting Deaf Albertans' rights and efforts to gain access to resources generally available to any other citizen of Alberta. Access to employment, education, recreation, housing, socializing and interpreting is vital. Language barriers cannot be allowed to stand in the way. Awareness: We are committed to ensuring that our unique language, culture, lifestyle and values are recognized and promoted.

For those staying at the Sandman Signature Calgary Downtown Hotel during Deaf Alberta Expo 2026, the hotel is only a 1-minute walk (about 91 m) from the University of Calgary Downtown Campus, where the Expo will be held. Just walk along 8 Street SW and you're there. The route is short and flat, so no need to worry about driving, parking, or taking transit.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation recognizes a history in which Indigenous children were taken from their families and placed in residential schools designed to erase their cultures, languages, and identities.
Survivors, families, and communities continue to live with the aftermath of that system, which did not end when the schools closed.
We commit to listening, learning, and supporting reconciliation. Every child, past, now and future matters.

International Week of Deaf People 2026, Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights from 21 to 27 September 2026.
Sunday 27 September 2026: 75 Years of Human Rights

In 1951, the World Federation of the Deaf was founded on a belief that deaf people everywhere should enjoy full human rights. Seventy-five years on, that founding commitment is inseparable from the work of our 138 national member organisations, the CRPD and its recognition of national sign languages and deaf culture in all areas of life. The work continues. Deaf people’s rights are human rights.

Deaf people are part of vibrant linguistic and cultural communities. The CRPD recognises the importance of respecting and promoting deaf culture and identity. Promoting national sign languages also means protecting cultural diversity and human dignity.

Thursday 24 September 2026: No Access Without National Sign Language (CRPD Article 9)
Accessibility is a human right, but it cannot be achieved without the national sign language. For deaf people, access to public services and information depends on the availability of national sign language services and inclusive communication. True accessibility includes national sign language at its core.
