Last week, VAST Resource Solutions and Artech Consulting Ltd. staff and families gathered for our annual staff BBQ — a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, enjoy some good food, and spend time together outside of work. The BBQ also gave us a chance to celebrate our summer students before they head back to school this fall.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a successful event. It’s always fun to bring the VAST and Artech teams, along with the families who support them, together. We appreciate all of you!

At VAST, our team works from multiple offices and communities, remote home offices, and in the field across some very different landscapes, but we remain connected by the work we do and the great people behind it.

Rod Metcalf is one of those people, and today we’d like to take a moment to recognize and thank him for the many ways he has helped shape VAST over the years.

Rod joined VAST in 2012 and is one of our longest-serving employees. Now based in Nova Scotia, he brings more than 33 years of experience in resource management, with work spanning British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia.

As a Project Manager and Senior Resource Technician, Rod’s work has covered everything from road and bridge construction supervision and resource road design to surveys, GIS and drafting, forest inventory, watercourse alterations and wetland delineation.

Whether he’s sharing his experience with colleagues, supporting projects from across the country, or sending us the occasional photo of his new pup, Tess, Rod is a valued part of the VAST team. His knowledge, mentorship, and commitment have made an important and lasting contribution to VAST over the past 14 years.

Thank you, Rod, for everything you have contributed — and continue to contribute — to VAST, our team, and our clients.

At VAST, one of the most rewarding parts of our summer student program is seeing talented young people return year after year, building new skills, taking on greater responsibility, and becoming valued members of our team.

Kyle Bjerstedt is a great example.

A Cranbrook local, Kyle is currently completing a Computer Science degree at the University of Lethbridge. Kyle has spent the past five summers returning to his hometown roots and working as a Forestry Junior at VAST. During that time, he’s contributed to bridge, hydro, layout, cruising, and waste management crews, gaining experience across a wide range of forestry field work.

“Over the past five summers as a Forestry Junior, I’ve had the opportunity to learn and grow in ways I never expected,” said Kyle. “Working in the field has taught me to be more aware of the wildlife and hazards around me, to become confident using navigational tools like compasses and Avenza Maps, and to adapt to the challenges that each day brings. Every role has taught me something new and helped me build confidence, whether it was working safely around heavy machinery, collecting accurate field data, or simply becoming more comfortable and capable in the outdoors.”

Kyle’s commitment to learning, his work ethic, and his versatility have earned the respect of colleagues across the company. Over five summers, he’s become someone people genuinely enjoy working with and trust to get the job done well.

“Kyle excels in all facets of forestry field work. There are always multiple requests from senior forestry staff each spring requesting Kyle as their summer partner. Having him return year after year has been extremely valuable,” says Operations Manager Jeff Westover.

Thanks, Kyle, for five great summers. We wish you all the best as you complete your degree this December.

10 Years with Artech Consulting!

This month, we're celebrating Mark Rosini, Materials Testing Technician, as he marks 10 years with VAST's sister company, Artech Consulting.

Over the past decade, Mark has built a reputation for his technical expertise, strong work ethic, and willingness to support those around him. One of the accomplishments he's most proud of is mentoring summer co-op students and watching them grow into confident professionals navigating their own career path—some of whom have gone on to join the VAST team.

Mark credits much of his own growth to Bryan Morrison, Operations Manager at Artech Consulting, whose mentorship helped him build confidence early in his career. Today, the two work side by side managing the materials testing lab.

When asked what has kept him with Artech/VAST for 10 years, Mark says it's the people.

"They take good care of their crew. It's a rare balance—a growing, locally owned company that offers big opportunities while still being small enough that you get to be involved in every aspect of the business."

From overnight concrete testing during the Jaffray Bridge project to making the beer pong finals at his very first Christmas party, Mark has created plenty of great memories throughout the years.

Congratulations, Mark, and thank you for everything you've contributed over the past 10 years. We're proud to have you on the team!

Congratulations to Shawn Bendig and Pete Wittstock on completing the 2026 Fernie Gravel Grind July 4! 🚵

They may work out of different VAST offices, but life in the Kootenays has a way of bringing people together. No matter if it's on a job site, a mountain lake, a bike trail, or around a campfire, the camaraderie doesn't end just because the workday does.
What a team.

We're proud to celebrate Jenn Prince’s 10-year anniversary with VAST Resource Solutions!

Jenn's journey is a testament to what can happen when hard work, curiosity, and opportunity come together. In 2016, Jenn completed a 4-month Advanced Forestry Skills course and joined VAST shortly afterward, launching her career in the forest industry. Ten years later, Jenn is a lead Silviculture Surveyor with VAST, contributing to a wide range of forestry, survey, and tree planting projects across the region.

"One of my proudest accomplishments has been building a career in forestry from the ground up. Working at VAST has provided me with valuable opportunities to learn, evolve, and gain confidence in my abilities," said Jen.

Jenn credits much of her growth to the guidance she received early in her career, particularly from Pete Sandberg, whose patience, mentorship, and steady leadership helped her navigate challenges in the field. Those experiences not only shaped the forestry professional she is today, but also influenced how she approaches her own role as a senior staff member: sharing knowledge, supporting teammates, and helping newer field staff build the confidence and skills needed to carve out their own path in the field.

Thank you, Jenn, for your dedication, leadership, and countless contributions over the past 10 years. We are grateful to have you on the team.

Congratulations on 10 years, Jenn!

🏃‍♂️🚴‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Keep it up, Cranbrook!

The ParticipACTION Community Challenge is officially halfway through, and Cranbrook is currently sitting in 1st place competing for the title of Canada's Most Active Community and a chance to win $100,000 for local sport and physical activity initiatives.

A big shoutout to all of our VAST team members who have been getting out and getting active this month. Every walk, run, bike ride, hike, swim, game, and workout helps build momentum for our community.

Special congratulations to our summer student Elliot Jones, Junior Resource Tech, who helped kick off ParticipACTION Month by completing a half-marathon at the Jaffray Off Road Mayhem. Incredible effort! 👏

Let's keep the momentum going and help Cranbrook stay on top. Every activity counts! For more information and to view community standings visit: https://www.participaction.com/programs/community-challenge/

Last week Dave Struthers and Thomas Malinowski had a great couple of days at CoalSMART, hosted in Blairmore, Alberta, where they connected with industry peers at one of the coal sector’s premier technical and networking events.

VAST was proud to co-sponsor the conference alongside our colleagues at Nupqu, as well as support the charity golf tournament as a hole sponsor.

At VAST, safety is always a priority — and something we work hard to keep top of mind. Earlier this month, our team gathered for hands-on Health & Safety Refresher training to kick off Safety & Health Week, covering everything from remote work protocols and hazard recognition to vehicle maintenance, quad safety, fire response, bear spray training, and more.

From summer students to seasoned field veterans, all employees took part in tuning up the skills and knowledge that help them take care of themselves and each other.

Last week, Mark Treleaven, Hannah Krausz, and Taylor Yee represented VAST Resource Solutions at the Southern Interior Timber Cruising Association (SITCA) Conference.

The event brought together forestry professionals from across B.C. to share knowledge, strengthen connections, and stay current on developments in timber cruising and forest management. Opportunities like these help our team continue building expertise, sharing perspectives, and staying connected to the evolving needs of the forestry sector.

Thanks to SITCA for hosting another great event!
