World Community’s Film Series continues Tuesday, March 10th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm) in the Stan Hagen Theatre, North Island College with the powerful film, "The Voice of Hind Rajab".
"The Voice of Hind Rajab" has been nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best International Film.
January 29, 2024, Red Crescent volunteers received an emergency call. A five-year old girl was trapped in a car under fire in Gaza, pleading for rescue. While trying to keep her on the line, they do everything they can to gain permission from the IDF to send paramedics to the location to save her. The girl's name was Hind Rajab Hamada.
Filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania takes us inside the Red Crescent call center and its efforts to save Hind’s life. While these employees are played by actors, the voice on the phone that we hear is the actual recording of Hind herself.
Ben Hania’s film has won many awards including the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival where it received a 24-minute standing ovation.
The film was made with the support of Hind’s mother and the real-life dispatchers who tried to coordinate the rescue effort. "The Voice of Hind Rajab" is a heartbreaking and unflinching portrayal of the dangers of humanitarian aid work in Palestine and a memorial to an innocent young girl who dreamed of becoming a doctor.
Hind’s mother Wasam Hamada said “I want justice for my daughter. Hind’s strength is what pushed me to keep her voice alive. She is no longer here but her story is our responsibility.”
Filmmaker Ben Hania states: “This is not a story. This is history. We can’t afford to look away. Bear witness, and if it’s really hard, do something about it.”
The screening is co-sponsored by Mid-Islanders for Justice and Peace in the Middle East.
The film is in Arabic with English subtitles.
