CoVal Choristers proudly present Les Misérables, November 22 to December 8 at the Old Church Theatre in Courtenay. Guaranteed to evoke every emotion, it is a moving story of hardship, cruelty, righteousness, mercy, heartbreak, laughter and love. After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean, prisoner 24601 is paroled into a bitter world of rejection and hardship, but encounters mercy and love. He

is relentlessly pursued for a breach of parole by a policeman, Javert. As the story unfolds we meet Fantine, a factory worker, whose daughter is boarded with the Thénardiers, who provide dark comedy as innkeepers. Éponine is the innkeepers’ daughter and becomes a rival with Cosette for the love of the student revolutionary Marius. Gavroche is a young child who becomes a revolutionary symbol of what ‘little people’ can do. The story takes many twists and turns involving bloodshed, love and heartbreak, underpinning the themes of social injustice and triumph of the human spirit.
