80 years ago we signed off the first collective agreement in our union's history with the BC Electric Railway Company, the predecessor company to BC Hydro along with several other companies.

Today, we're pleased to congratulate our members who work at BC Hydro & Powertech on ratifying their new collective agreement!

The four-year agreement is retroactive to April 2025 and includes wage increases consistent with the public sector mandate plus numerous highlights for our members including a raising of the wage floor and reduction of the time it takes to reach top pay, improving lifetime earnings in the future, increased and expanded benefits, and much more!

In Canada, while we have prided ourselves as being a place where enslaved African Americans fled to and found freedom through the Underground Railroad, it's important to recognize our own long history of slavery and the ongoing legacy of anti-Black racism.

Today (June 19) marks the observance of Juneteenth in the United States. June 19, 1865, is considered the day where slavery was abolished entirely in the United States.

In 2021, Canada designated August 1 to be Emancipation Day, marking the actual day in 1834 that slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834. Today, however, Black people in Canada continue to face racism, and movements such as Black Lives Matter demonstrate there is still work to be done to combat and eliminate anti-Black racism.

Last week, MoveUP President Annette Toth visited our members in Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, and Kamloops!

It was great to connect with our members in these communities who work at BC Hydro, FortisBC, ICBC, IBEW, and BCGEU offices. Thank you for welcoming us into your workplaces, and for the great conversations about your positions and why you love the work you do.

This Sunday, June 21, 2026, is the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day. It's a day to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice. For generations, many communities have celebrated their cultures, languages, and traditions at this time of year. The summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

On Tuesday, MoveUP Vice-President Christy Slusarenko, Executive Board Member Safar Alikhani, and Union Representative Andrew Cheverie, alongside Executive Councillors Tim and Timo, brought our members who work at the Burnaby Transit Centre together for a pizza lunch meet-and-greet.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to chat about how their work at Coast Mountain Bus Company has been going, and the vital roles they play to keep our transit system running, especially during busy periods like right now with the FIFA World Cup happening in Vancouver.

On Tuesday, MoveUP Secretary-Treasurer Brenda Chu and Vice-President Rysa Kronebusch paid a visit to the BC Hydro Edmonds Annex office to greet our members who work there.

On Monday, MoveUP Vice-President Christy Slusarenko and Union Representative Andrew Cheverie paid a visit to Coast Mountain Bus Company to offer our best wishes to Maureen H., who will be retiring at the end of this week.

Maureen has been with CMBC for 25 years, starting out in the call centre, then moving on to Customer Relations Department before finishing off her career in the Depot. She's looking forward to spending more time with her many grandchildren.

Our union stands in support of the members of the GVRDEU. Today, MoveUP VP Christy Slusarenko took time to show our solidarity with the members of the GVRDEU on the picket line as they began their full strike.

Members of the GVRDEU operate and maintain vital regional services in Metro Vancouver. They're looking for a fair deal for the services they provide, one that addresses their concern regarding worker safety, contracting out, and recruitment and retention.
