This is the beginning of one of our favourite times of the year: Pride. It’s a season to celebrate our 2SLGBTQIA+ members, family, friends and neighbours: the contributions they make to our movement and our lives, and their enduring, invaluable presence in our community.

We celebrate even as we protest, finding joy in our unity and solidarity against discrimination, fear, hate and violence. Attacks on 2SLGBTQIA+ people have escalated exponentially, and yet we begin this season full of hope and, yes, pride.

🌈 Pride in our 2SLGBTQIA+ members, and in our members who stand with them as allies.

🌈 Pride in BC’s teachers, and the work they do to make British Columbia’s classrooms safe, open and welcoming places.

🌈 Pride in seeing our province overwhelmingly reject those seeking to exploit the terrible tragedy in Tumbler Ridge to spread ignorance, hate and fear.

🌈 And pride in everyone working to turn back the tide of hate, and to continue making our communities places where all of us can live as our full selves.

We still have a long way to go, of course. Two thirds of 2SLGBTQIA+ workers in a Canadian Labour Congress report have experienced harassment and violence at work. (That’s on top of being more likely to have trouble making ends meet.) And they’re profoundly underrepresented in legislatures and elected leadership at all levels.

But that can change. And it will, if we’re willing to do what it takes.

To 2SLGBTQIA+ members, we encourage you to consider running for office. both in our movement and in local, provincial and municipal elections. And to all of our members, we hope you’ll give them your encouragement, time and support when they do.

Be sure to show up for Pride events in your community, in a spirit of celebration and solidarity. Throughout Pride month and all year round, BC’s unions are proud to stand with 2SLGBTQIA+ workers and communities here in BC and around the world.

Today, MoveUP President and COPE National President Annette Toth joined thousands of Albertans and Canadians to participate in the province-wide Day of Protest in Alberta.

Albertans are fighting back against the UCP Government. Albertans are fighting against two-tier healthcare, attacks to their constitutional rights including their right to strike, the affordability crisis, and in support of public school funding among other issues.

Our union stands in solidarity with working people and families in Alberta as they ! It is important for us to stand with Albertans today so that the attacks they are facing now don't happen to all Canadians across the country.

MoveUP and COPE National President Annette Toth was in Edmonton today representing our union, our national union, and our thousands of our members across Canada standing in solidarity with Albertans, First Nations communities, migrant communities, parent groups and labour unions, as we come together to collectively fight back against attacks on workers and people by Premier Danielle Smith and UCP Government.

Today, MoveUP staff members joined many other workers at a rally in support of the members of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees' Union (GVRDEU) who are on strike.

This afternoon, MoveUP President Annette Toth, Secretary-Treasurer Brenda Chu, and several of our staff members stopped by one of the picket lines put up by the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees' Union (GVRDEU) to offer our support and solidarity.

These workers maintain vital services across Greater Vancouver and they want a fair and respectful deal that reflects the essential work that they perform every day.

Thank you to our members and their companions for joining us last night for our Monet Meets Merlot paint night at The Upside Cidery. It was a wonderful event with good food, yummy beverages, fabulous service, and wonderful instruction.

Thanks to our Events & Social Planning Committee for planning another fantastic event for our members to get together to enjoy each other's company, and a special shout out to our committee members in the Okanagan for making it all come together!

Today, MoveUP held our Executive Council Meeting - beginning the new 3-year term for our Executive Councillors! We saw some familiar faces, and also welcomed new members who have stepped up to fill these important roles in our union. We thank all our Executive Councillors for their passion for workers’ rights.
