Labour Day isn’t just about picnics and parades, although there are plenty of those happening in your local communities as well. Labour Day is meant to be a day where we celebrate the historic and ongoing contributions of workers to our communities, to building our economy, and to building a progressive world.

Today, workers are still fighting to improve our communities. We’re fighting to preserve our public services, our public healthcare system, for a living wage, for affordable childcare, for affordable housing, and so much more.

The ballot box is where all of us, as workers, can influence change the most. In just over a month, our members who work in BC, Manitoba, and Ontario will be heading to the polls for municipal elections. Our members who work in Quebec will also soon be headed into a provincial election. It is critical that we ensure workers’ rights are top of mind for the people who are put into public office, and that they are committed to ensuring that our communities are inclusive, friendly places where people feel safe and families can thrive.

"Over the past week, we have heard politicians say... 'If you see a Canadian product, buy it'. How can we continue to source the most expensive products our province purchases from a foreign country, when we can create the conditions to build them here - with Canadian workers, with Canadian steel, with Canadian industry. The time is now." - Brynn Bourke, BC Building Trades Executive Director

BC Ferries should be built in BC. This morning, MoveUP President Annette Toth attended a press conference and stood in solidarity with over 20 unions in the 'Build Them Here' coalition. MoveUP is proud to be a part of this coalition of unions and industry leaders who are working to keep good jobs in BC.

When we build ferries here, we are investing good jobs for British Columbians and in ferries that we can fix and maintain here at home. BC shipbuilders are among the best in the world, but BC Ferries recently decided to build four new major vessels in China instead of in BC.

MoveUP is proud to support women in sports and the workplace.

Today our Events & Social Planning Committe was excited to have our members and their friends and family come together to take in some incredible women’s soccer action as we watched the defending NSL champions Vancouver Rise take on the Calgary Wild.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to the committee for their work organizing! See you at the next social event!

We at MoveUP are heartbroken to hear of the passing of MLA Joan Phillip, Amshen, earlier today. Joan was a leader, a visionary, a teacher and a friend to the labour movement. The loss of her presence will leave a massive and unfillable hole in our communities. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and the love of her life Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, as they navigate this profoundly difficult time. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the Cancer Society of BC.

TODAY we held a BBQ for our members working at the Alma Mater Society at UBC! We enjoyed some delicious burgers and corn on the cob, while having some great conversations about our members' work on campus and how they can get even more involved with their union. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this end-of-summer event a huge success! ☀️
