Chicago, 1886. Workers walked off the job to demand a basic thing: Eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, eight hours for yourself. People held the line long enough then that working 8 hours is normal for us today.

To every member of our community: thank you for being part of the solution.
Happy International Workers Day from every member of Local 506.

This day started because unions pushed for it. Too many workers were getting hurt or killed, often in unsafe conditions they couldn’t control.
The safety rules we follow now exist because people paid for them with their lives. We remember those workers.
We keep pushing for safer jobs and the right to speak up.
Everyone deserves to go home.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work started with one simple idea: work should never cost you your life or your health.
Sometimes it only takes five seconds to prevent an injury.
Take a second look. Ask the question.
Overconfidence is dangerous. Even if you’ve been doing the job for decades, mistakes can still happen.
Most injuries don’t come out of nowhere. They build up from things people ignore or brush off.
Follow the rules. Look out for each other.
That’s how we all go home safe.

This job isn’t just physical. It wears on your head too. Long hours and tough days add up. If you're having a hard time, don’t just tough it out. Talk to someone. Use your benefits. Call FSEAP. You don’t have to deal with it on your own.

In 1971, BC teachers took their first real job action. They were dealing with low pay, weak pension plans, and little say in their working conditions.
So, they organized. They held meetings, walked out of classrooms, and put pressure on the government and school boards to take them seriously. It wasn’t easy. They risked pay, backlash, and their jobs. But by standing together, they forced change: better pensions, better conditions, more respect.
Same idea in shipbuilding unions.
Everyday people stand together and raise the bar for what work can be.
Better contracts, fair pay, and safe worksites.

Shipbuilding can be loud, physical, and takes years of training. It’s not an easy job. But at the end of the day, you can point at something real and say you helped build it. Not every job gives you that.
If you want to work on something bigger than yourself, with a team that has your back, this is it.

Just because cutting corners worked before doesn’t mean it always will. It only takes one missed step for something to go wrong.

* Use the gear, even if it feels like overkill
* Speak up if something looks off
* Don’t rush the job
* Follow the process, even if you’ve done it a hundred times

Taking a few extra minutes can save someone from getting hurt.

Stress builds up for everyone sometimes. Long shifts, tight deadlines, pressure at home- sometimes it all adds up. Don’t wait until you’re burned out. Talk to someone. A coworker. A rep. FSEAP. Looking after your head is part of staying safe.
