On February 19, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved Trident (Tryzub) as the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine. This decision reaffirmed continuity with the Ukrainian People’s Republic, which had approved the Tryzub as its state emblem in 1918.

While there is no single, universally accepted meaning of tryzub, it is interpreted as:
🔹The Trinity: Representing a Christian symbol of the Holy Spirit.
🔸Divine Elements: A combination of fire and water.
🔹Symbolic Shapes: A stylized falcon (Raroh), a falcon diving, an anchor, or a bow with an arrow.
🔸Hidden Word: A popular, modern interpretation suggests the word volya (freedom) is encrypted within the shape.
