UBC academic workers vote overwhelmingly for strike action

A great but busy week at the 2026 Union of BC Municipalities convention. So much excellent learning about the challenges facing our local governments, and the excellent work being done by leaders and municipal workers across the provinces to deliver for communities, residents, families, businesses, and visitors.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our annual reception, including Premier David Eby. It was again a great evening filled with renewed connections, excellent conversations, and appreciation for all the work done by our dedicated local government leaders.

As in past years, CUPE BC was pleased to be joined at UBCM by the Ambulance Paramedics Of BC and Emergency Communications Professionals of BC, CUPE Locals 873 and 8911. Their presence enhances an already strong CUPE presence at this event.

Finally, we want to send a special message of appreciation out to Gary MacIsaac who is retiring at UBCM's Executive Director this year. Working in the role since 2007, Mr. MacIsaac has contributed to so much to local government in our province, and we want to recognize his years of service and dedication. We also want to welcome Kim Grout into the role, and look forward to working with her in the years to come.

Another great event CUPE BC sponsored this month is the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Fringe has its roots in Scotland where uninvited performers were forced to the fringe of the Edinburgh International Festival, and the movement spread globally from there. The Vancouver festival dates back to 1985, and embraces the same principles as other festivals across the world that provides a low-cost, inclusive space for arts to showcase a diverse array of art forms.

In sponsoring Vancouver Fringe, we were pleased to support this great community event, help keep costs low for the community to access great performances, and support artists of all types having access to space and promotion.

Today we join with workers and their families across British Columbia to celebrate Labour Day. I’m communities of all sizes, we gather to reflect on the victories we’ve achieved, the struggles we continue to overcome, and the solidarity we share.

This year the CUPE BC van and President Ranalletta joined members of CUPE 2979, District of Tumbler Ridge Workers, for a great event at the Lion’s Flatbed Creek Park. We were so excited to also be joined by BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) President Carole Gordon as we unite together in solidarity across the K-12 sector, and provide continued support to worked in Tumbler Ridge as the new school year starts.

As the next school year is just days away, the BC government has made some important announcements that move our public education and childcare system forward.

Yesterday, $2.9 million was announced to create hundreds of new in-house, publicly delivered school-aged childcare spaces. This is a huge step forward in the delivery of seamless before- and after-school childcare in public schools.

Today, the BC government marked its 250th school capital project since 2017 with the opening of 23 new and improved schools this September.

We know that there is still a long way to go to create the public education and childcare system kids and families need. But these announcements a good reminder of the big difference between this government and the last when it comes to the public education and childcare, and the progress still being made towards a better public system for BC.
