I don’t even know where to begin.

This started from pain. From losing my mates Karim, Todd and Dan. From asking myself if I was doing enough. From refusing to accept that su***de had to keep stealing the people we love.

In 2017, Troy Coward and I turned that pain into purpose and founded . It wasn’t easy. There were setbacks, critics, and moments where momentum felt slow. But we stayed the course.

Today, standing beside the first Lions Beacon of Light Mind Health Van, I feel overwhelming gratitude.

To the incredible women at Joondalup — Belinda, Monica, Donna and Hayley — you didn’t just approve a sausage sizzle. You believed in the vision. You backed it and went above and beyond to make it happen.

To my club, , and the wider — especially Ray Zinner, the driving force behind the 102-hour record attempt, along with Louise, Kay and Jack LeCras — thank you. Ray, your leadership brought this launch to life.

To , , Greg from , Paola and Shaye from , and every single volunteer who gave their time and heart — this belongs to you too.

Thank you to Commissioner Col Blanch for opening the event and Major Daniel Kingston for closing it with strength and respect.

And most importantly, thank you to the people of Western Australia. To those who came down, bought a sausage, purchased a virtual sausage online, or simply stopped to talk — as of 9:30am Monday 2.03.26, nearly 50 people have had a 10-minute conversation at the van.

Nearly 50 lives that chose to pause.
Nearly 50 reminders that this matters.

Su***de is a permanent solution to what can be a short-term problem.
And a 10-minute conversation could change the path of someone’s life.

This is for Karim.
This is for Todd.
This is for Dan.

And this is only the beginning.

Bunnings Joondalup to Host 102-Hour Sausage Sizzle World Record Attempt in Support of Lions Beacon of Light

Bunnings Joondalup will host what is believed to be Australia’s longest continuous sausage sizzle this month, as the Lions Clubs of WA attempt a 102-hour BBQ marathon to launch its new Mind Health Van and raise vital funds for su***de prevention across Western Australia.

The sausage sizzle will be officially opened by WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch at 10:00am Thursday 26 February and run non-stop until 4:00pm Monday 2 March 2026, with a fundraising target of $20,000 to support the van’s ongoing operations across the state.

The initiative comes amid confronting national statistics, with approximately nine Australians dying by su***de every day. Su***de remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44, and 75 per cent of those who die by su***de are male1.

The Lions Beacon of Light - Mind Health Van is an early intervention initiative designed to provide conversations, connection and referral pathways before crisis escalates. The service is not an emergency provider but focuses on being present in communities where people feel safe to talk.

The project was co-founded by Derek Best and Troy Coward through Beacon Fight for Life, both bringing lived experience to the mission. Derek lost three close friends to su***de in a short period, while Troy’s father tragically took his own life when Troy was just 15 years old.

“A 10-minute conversation could change the path of someone’s life,” Mr Best said.

Throughout the 102 hours, customers will be able to track progress via a live countdown poster showing how long the BBQ has been running and how much time remains. A visual fundraising gauge will also be updated every four hours by Lions volunteers so the community can see the impact building in real time.

A cherry blossom artwork symbolising renewal and hope will be on display for the entire marathon. Customers will be invited to add their thumbprint as a leaf on the canvas, creating a growing visual representation of community support.

In a unique twist, once the store closes each evening, the BBQ will continue with a drive through “Snag and Collect” service running from 9:00pm to 6:00am. Bunnings and Lions representatives in high visibility hats and vests marked “Snag and Collect” will serve customers through the night.

To encourage early morning support between 4:00am and 6:00am, every sausage purchase during this time will come with a free coffee from the Bunnings café.

Hayley Coulson, Bunnings General Manager of Store Operations, said the Joondalup team was proud to support a cause that impacts families across Western Australia.

“Su***de prevention is something that touches communities right across the State,” Ms Coulson said.

“Our sausage sizzles have always been about bringing people together. This 102-hour effort shows just how powerful that community spirit can be when it is focused on saving lives.”
Community members are encouraged to attend at any time, day or night, to purchase a sausage, volunteer or show their support. Those unable to attend can contribute by purchasing a Virtual Sausage online:
