Mental wellbeing doesn’t have an age limit.

Through Silverchain’s EMBED program, Mary has shared her experiences to help improve support for older Australians.

Her story is a reminder that staying connected, feeling heard and looking after your mental health are important at every stage of life.

In welcome news for older Australians, the Federal Government today has announced that the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) will be retained as a vital part of the aged care system.

CHSP is the entry point for many older people to aged care. It provides supports such as cleaning, shopping, meals on wheels, transport, home maintenance, social support and allied health.

Silverchain advocated for CHSP to continue as a distinct, strengthened, and block-funded aged care program, not rolled into Support at Home.

This is welcomed news for so many, but we will continue to advocate for a stronger, sustainably funded CHSP with a greater focus on prevention, reablement and social connection, while ensuring people can move seamlessly to Support at Home as their needs become more complex.

Last week, our Fremantle Social Centre hosted students from Fremantle College and The Studio School, who interviewed six of our long-time Fremantle clients as part of the City of Fremantle’s Map of Memories project. It was a wonderful intergenerational exchange, with young people learning from the lived experiences of an older generation and helping preserve their stories for generations to come.

Do you find yourself saying...

✅I help my dad with his medication
✅I drive mum to and from doctors’ appointments
✅I care for my brother but it is only a few hours a week

If this sounds familiar, you may be one of the 1 in 8 Australians who provide unpaid care to someone they love.

Unpaid carers support family and friends in many ways. This can include organising appointments, managing medication, driving to and from hospital, helping with personal care and providing emotional support.

These responsibilities matter. If you provide unpaid care, help or assistance, the Australian Bureau of Statistics wants to make sure it is captured in the 2026 Census tomorrow night.

If you receive Carer Allowance or Carer Payment, remember to select “Yes” when asked if you provide unpaid care, help or assistance.

Your response helps build a clearer picture of unpaid caring across Australia.

Today on Aged Care Employee Day, we are celebrating our dedicated and compassionate colleagues at Silverchain who support more than 40,000 older people across Australia.

Aged Care Employee Day is an opportunity to celebrate all those across aged care who make a real difference by supporting older Australians to maintain their health, wellbeing and independence every day.

Whether directly providing care to our clients, or supporting those who do, we are grateful for the care and professionalism of our Silverchain colleagues in aged care. Our chain of care starts with them. Thank you for caring, today and every day.

Yesterday, we hosted our Understanding the Government’s End of Life Pathway webinar. We explored a range of case studies designed to support patient referrals, along with key insights into eligibility criteria, services covered under the pathway, and how it complements existing generalist and specialist Palliative Care services.

Silverchain had a great turnout at the Perth Ageing Well Expo, with plenty of visitors stopping by our stand to learn more about our services and Support at Home.

A highlight was our Silverchain Retreat, where 6PR Perth broadcast The Long Lunch with Tod Johnston live.

Our General Manager of Care Partnering, Cassie Tobin, was interviewed on the program before presenting to a packed audience on Support at Home.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a success and represented Silverchain so well.

Did you know, Silverchain nurses provide free health care and support at St. Patrick's Community Support Centre (St Pat’s) in Fremantle, Western Australia, for people without a home or a strong support network?

For more than a decade, our nurses have run the centre’s in house clinic pro bono. With generous community support to Silverchain Foundation, they continue to deliver essential care to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
