National Reconciliation Week is a time for learning, reflection, and meaningful action. This year’s theme, ‘All In’, calls on every one of us to actively contribute to reconciliation in our daily work and lives.

At Silverchain, being 'All In' means committing to truth-telling, listening deeply to First Nations peoples’ stories and perspectives, standing against racism, supporting First Nations businesses and culture, and using our voice to advocate for positive change in the communities we serve.

As we reflect on our reconciliation journey, we acknowledge the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead. Some change takes generations, while other steps can be taken today. What matters most is that we move forward together, with everyone involved.

We are so proud of Adjunct Professor Tanya Davison for her exceptional leadership in improving mental health care for older Australians, winning the Paul Johnson Positive Ageing Award at the Positive Ageing Summit last week.

Silverchain’s Dr Tanya Davison has been recognised for her work in mental health care for older adults living at home and named the second Paul Johnson Positive Ageing Award winner.

This week, during National Volunteer Week, we celebrate our volunteers in Western Australia who give their time to make a difference to others. This year’s theme is ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, and we thank our volunteers like Michael, who has been who has been caring for Silverchain clients since 2018.

Michael visits Silverchain clients in their home who are experiencing various stages of dementia, providing regular social visits to up to three clients per week. He consistently demonstrates patience, kindness, and compassion, taking genuine interest in clients’ life stories and offering meaningful support.

Michael also provides companionship and assistance to our clients receiving in-home palliative care services. He consistently goes out of his way to make time for those in his care, demonstrating compassion, flexibility and a deep commitment to supporting clients during some of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

We give our thanks to Michael and all volunteers for the selfless work you do each day.

This International Nurses Day, Silverchain is highlighting a simple truth: Australia cannot meet its future care needs without enabling nurses to work to their full scope of practice.

Unlocking the full potential of Australia’s nursing workforce is key to unlocking the future capacity of our health system.

Across the country, community‑based nurses already deliver complex and acute care every day. Our experience shows that when nurses are supported to work to the full extent of their education and professional capability, care becomes more accessible, more efficient, and more sustainable.

As Australia adapts to the health needs of the 21st century, modernising scope‑of‑practice settings is an important part of building a system that is both high‑quality and financially sustainable. This includes reviewing rules, funding models, and long‑standing practices that limit nurses to delegated, task‑based care rather than recognising their professional competence.

For more than 130 years, Silverchain has pioneered nurse‑led models of care, improving the health of multiple generations of Australians. These models demonstrate what is possible when nurses are enabled to practise independently and to their full scope.

Storm and Cooper visited our Everglades Social Centre this week, and they brought enough cuddles to brighten everyone’s day. Massive shout‑out to Jenny and the team for making this tail‑wagging therapy session happen. Our clients loved every minute.

After a fall left Sunshine Coast resident Michael paralysed from the neck down, months of rehab and support from his Silverchain Care Team and Michelle, his dedicated carer, helped him regain mobility and independence.

Determined and positive, he faces each day with resilience and a smile.

Ahead of ANZAC Day, we honour a legacy of leadership and community care.

Dr Henry Arthur Powell served on the frontlines of World War I before continuing his service as President of the District Trained Nursing Society - now part of Silverchain.

Through times of hardship, he remained a strong advocate for nurses and a committed leader in community-based care.

His legacy continues to shape how we deliver care today.

We welcome the Federal Government's decision to include personal care in the no co-contribution category of Support at Home. Along with a range of consumer representatives bodies, providers, and consumers themselves, Silverchain has been advocating for this amendment since 2024.

No one should bear the financial strain of maintaining their dignity at home. Restoring crucial supports like showering and dressing is a welcome win for older people. This is a common sense decision, and we thank the Government for correcting course on this important access and equity issue.

We urge the Federal Government to consider bringing forward the implementation of this change before 1 October 2026. We will keep our clients and the community updated as more information becomes available.
