The History of the Houben Bloodline

THE FOUNDATION

Jef Houben's father, Gerard Houben, had been breeding pigeons since around 1920. However, Jef was the one who would eventually transform the family's knowledge and breeding program into the famous Houben family of racing pigeons.

The History of the Hank Vernazza Bloodline

The Hank Vernazza family is one of the most influential Janssen-based bloodlines developed in the United States. Its story began in California in the early 1960s, when Henry “Hank” Vernazza acquired exceptional Belgian pigeons through the legendary pigeon selector Piet de Weerd.

🇧🇪 The Foundation: Janssen × Van de Flaes

One of the most important foundation birds was the famous “Red Hen,” a red-check hen imported in 1963. Importantly, she was not a direct Janssen-bred pigeon from the Janssen Brothers themselves. She was bred by Albert Van de Flaes of Ravels, Belgium, from Van de Flaes stock heavily based on the Janssen family.

THE HISTORY OF THE MARCEL AELBRECHT BLOODLINE
From a Small Loft in Lebbeke to a World-Famous Racing Family

When discussing the great names in Belgian long-distance pigeon racing, Marcel Aelbrecht is a name that deserves special recognition.

His story is not simply about winning races. It is a story of selection, patience, breeding, discipline, and the development of a powerful family of racing pigeons that became famous far beyond Belgium.

Marcel Aelbrecht began racing pigeons in 1954. In his early years, he concentrated mainly on speed racing. However, his working commitments and an inadequate loft limited what he could achieve.

Everything began to change when Marcel built a better loft, including a wooden floor and improved heating and loft conditions. His performances quickly improved, and he became a formidable competitor in the Quiévrain races.

THE MOVE TOWARD LONG DISTANCE

After many years of success in speed racing, Marcel searched for a greater challenge.

By the late 1980s, he began building the foundation of his long-distance family.

An important influence was his close friend and neighbor Frans Sablon, of the famous De Rauw-Sablon family. Through these connections and carefully selected breeding, Marcel began developing a family specifically capable of performing at the demanding long-distance level.

The results were extraordinary.

During the late 1990s, Aelbrecht gained major national recognition after outstanding performances in races such as La Souterraine. The following year, he achieved another historic result by winning the National Perpignan race.
