Woodvale Waters Friends of Beenyup Channel have been truly blessed over the past few weeks with perfect weather to work in our beautiful area and also for the visits from 3 amazing corporate work groups.
On Tuesday 26th May we had our 3rd group visit for the month. as National Volunteer week was 18-24th May all these visits were timely.
This was the second time that we have hosted a group from Ernst & Young and the numbers keep growing. 18 E & Y employees visited us last Tuesday. It was a stunning day to be away from the Office and I know from the happy smiles and laughter that all enjoyed the day. The group worked very hard too, even the ladies used the whipper enippers and augers. Around 900 holes were augered completing the number for our June 28 Community Planting Day and these were filled with water crystals so they would take up supplies from the expected rain. Around 4 bags of South African bulbs (w**ds) were removed from the planting area. Another 13 bags of flat w**ds were also removed from a recently newly planted area and other individuals whipper snipped several areas which keeps w**ds under control.
We finished the day with a fabulous picnic supplied by E & Y under the shade of a tree overlooking the lake. Just PERFECT.
Thanks to the WWFBC crew for their organisation and participation to ensure everything went smoothly on the day.

WWFBC hope to see all our Corporate groups again as they are all very welcome.

On Tuesday 19th May we had a visit from 11 Scott Park Homes employees. They had a fabulous time and really did a great job. They planted and mulched 330 dryland plants and a very dedicated group of 3 spent their time on the augers drilling around 1300 holes in preparation for our Community Planting Day on Sunday June 28th. We have around 2500 plants to plant across 2 areas on tht day, one funded by a Landcare Grant sponsored by BUPA.
Thanks to the team from Scott Park for the wonderful assistance you provided. Thanks also to the Catherine and the team at Volunteering WA, for organising the day. As always much appreciated

Last Tuesday, 12th May, we hosted a wonderful group of hard working volunteers from Minderoo. They planted, mulched and watered 460 plants during the morning. It was a beautiful day making our work day fun and productive. Thanks to Volunteering WA for organising the day.

It was all hands on deck last Friday, with the crew assisted by Carlos from DBCA and volunteers Mike and Tom helping to remove water hyacinth plants at Wallyburnup Swamp.
We had a very successful morning as you can see from the photos below.

Water hyacinth is a declared w**d in WA and is widely regarded as the worlds worst aquatic w**d.
If not removed it can form a dense and impenetrable floating mat on the water’s surface.

Unfortunately we did remove breakaway plants close to the edge of the swamp this time.
If you see any water hyacinth plants, no matter how big or how small, please give Bryan a call on 0412 400 874.

A big thankyou to Carnaby’s Crusaders, Cans for Carnaby’s-Black-Cockatoo Fund Raising & Padbury Community Garden.
We now have 3 cocky tubes and a monitoring camera courtesy of these lovely people.
Eagle eyed walkers may be able to spot the tubes in the large trees between the boardwalk and the bridge on the eastern side of the lake.

If you would like to donate your 10c cans to help install more cocky tubes please check out the Cans for Carnaby’s FB group. ❤️

Remember those cute little fish 🐠 that grew too big for the fish tank?
The ones you thought would be better off in the lake?
Take a look at them now. 😟
Tom and the team from Murdoch University were at the lake last Wednesday doing some electro fishing.
Around 75-80 carp and goldfish, some over 7kg were caught.
These fish destroy native vegetation, degrade the water quality and threaten local fish species. They also can produce up to 1 million eggs per year!

🙏So please do the right thing and don’t release them in local lakes and wetlands. 🙏

⭐️The good news is Tom and the team spotted many snake neck turtles 🐢 on the eastern side of the lake. ⭐️

It will look terrific when it all grows too..
