Clean laundry. Better health. Stronger communities.

Mercy Works is proud to expand our partnership with the Aboriginal Investment Group by funding the Borroloola Remote Laundry throughout FY2027.

Recently, Executive Director Sally Bradley RSM and Head of Programs Andrew Lowry travelled to Borroloola with Aboriginal Investment Group CEO Elizabeth Morgan-Brett and Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Indigenous Corporation CEO Robert Wendl to visit the laundry and mark Mercy Works' support for the coming year.

While access to clean clothes and bedding may seem simple, it can have a significant impact on health. Regular washing and hot drying help reduce the spread of scabies mites and other bacteria that can contribute to serious health conditions, including skin infections, kidney disease and rheumatic heart disease.

The Borroloola Remote Laundry provides free access to laundry facilities for community members and is one example of how practical, community-led solutions can improve health and wellbeing.

We are grateful to partner with the Aboriginal Investment Group and local communities to support initiatives that promote dignity, health and opportunity.

One caring volunteer can make a lasting difference. 💜

Recently, the Belmont Conversational Beginner's English class came together to celebrate Mercy Works Connect volunteer mentor Terry and all they had achieved together.

Terry has generously shared his time and talents with Mercy Works Connect for many years, supporting students in schools and, since September last year, leading the Belmont Conversational Beginner's English class. He also volunteers at Balga Senior High School, helping students build confidence in their English.

Through practical conversation, reading, pronunciation and everyday English, Terry has supported people from refugee, asylum-seeker and migrant backgrounds to build language skills, confidence and connections. Along the way, he has shared a touch of Australian culture, plenty of humour, and unwavering encouragement.

"I focus on pronunciation because many of the students read English well but haven't had many opportunities to speak English in conversation," Terry said. "It's a wonderful experience. We have a wonderful team."

Volunteer mentors are at the heart of Mercy Works Connect, walking alongside people from refugee, asylum-seeker and migrant backgrounds as they build language skills, confidence and a sense of belonging.

Mercy Works is pleased to announce a new partnership with Amplify Black Women (ABW), a Sydney-based organisation dedicated to supporting Black women to thrive in Australia.

ABW is committed to creating a strong, empowered community where Black women have access to the resources, opportunities and support they need to succeed in all areas of life. Through programs and events focused on financial literacy, personal development and mental health, ABW works to uplift, educate and inspire.

Today, Mercy Works and ABW formally signed a partnership agreement for the 2026–27 financial year. Together, we will support initiatives that strengthen confidence, connection and opportunity for Black women and their families.

We look forward to sharing stories throughout the year of the impact this partnership will have in helping Black women build a sense of belonging and flourish in their communities.

Behind every refugee is a unique story.

This Refugee Week, Mercy Works staff and Mercy Works Connect volunteers from across Australia came together to hear from Maisam Waseem, who shared his family's journey from Afghanistan to Australia after the Taliban takeover in 2021 made it unsafe for them to remain in their homeland.

Maisam spoke about the difficult decision to leave everything behind, the challenges of starting again in a new country, and the small acts of kindness that helped his family feel welcomed and supported.

Today, Maisam is supporting students from refugee and multicultural backgrounds as an Education Assistant in Perth, drawing on his own experience of rebuilding life in a new country.

This year's Refugee Week theme, A Million Stories, reminds us that behind every refugee is a story of courage, resilience, hope and belonging.

Today, Mercy Works had the privilege of speaking at Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta's school assembly and sharing more about the importance of walking alongside Indigenous Australians and communities experiencing hardship.

We are so grateful to the OLMC Parramatta community for their generosity and inspiring fundraising efforts in support of Mercy Works. Their contribution will help create opportunity, dignity and self-reliance for people and communities in Australia and overseas.

A special thank you to the wonderful students and staff for your warm welcome and commitment to living out Mercy in action. 💙

Last week, Mercy Works was honoured to be one of the beneficiary charities at the Western Sydney Corporate Charity Lunch.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share the impact of our Mercy Works Connect program with the Western Sydney business community and to highlight the importance of supporting people from refugee and asylum-seeker backgrounds as they build new lives in Australia.

We were proud to share stories of hope, connection and opportunity — and grateful to stand alongside our incredible volunteers, educators and learners who make this work possible every day.

A heartfelt thank you to the event organisers, supporters and everyone who helped make the day such a success. Your generosity and encouragement mean so much to our community.

Thank you, Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, for your warm welcome and ongoing support of Mercy Works.

It was wonderful to spend time with Year 5 students and see the Mercy spirit in action. We look forward to hearing more about Mercy Markets in Term 2! 🤍

Just before the end of last term, Year 5 welcomed Danielle from Mercy Works, who shared with them who Mercy Works are and how they help people in need.

As a school founded by the Sisters of Mercy, we are proud to support Mercy Works each year as we put our faith into action. Stay tuned for more news in Term 2 as we prepare for our annual Mercy Market!
