Through our work with the most challenged people in Australia and the South-East Asia Pacific region, everyone at Mercy Works is continually reminded of these words from Catherine McAuley. We support long term development projects that engage in partnerships with communities. The needs of people who are denied access to basic resources like education, health care and social welfare are often urgent. However, for sustainable change, it’s important that they make informed decisions about their future and play a driving role in determining the support they receive. For that reason, we only respond to requests for help – we never impose what help we might think people need. That is the only way to foster meaningful and enduring change in people lives. Across our region of the world, there are so many people living in desperate circumstances. We believe it is our duty to do something to help today and every day – to make, as Catherine McAuley also said, “some lasting efforts for the relief of the poor and suffering.”

Thank you, West HQ !!!!

Mercy Works is grateful to receive funding from West HQ through the Blacktown City ClubGRANTS program for two programs delivered by our community partners in Western Sydney.

💛 Mums and Bubs, delivered by Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation, brings Aboriginal mothers and their young children together in a welcoming space to connect, learn and support one another.

🍲 Kitchen Connect – Cooking Stories, delivered by AFGHAN WOMEN ON THE MOVE, brings women together through cooking, helping them develop skills, share experiences and build connections.

We were pleased to attend the recent Blacktown City ClubGRANTS Annual Recipient Ceremony, hosted by Club Blacktown, and celebrate the many local organisations making a difference in their communities.

International Day of the Girl

“Know your worth, and just be confident.”
“Make your voices heard.”
“I’d say be brave.”

These are some of the messages Afghan women share with the next generation in My Mother and I: The Untold Stories of Afghan Women.

Created by AFGHAN WOMEN ON THE MOVE in partnership with Mercy Works, the documentary brings together 13 Afghan mothers and daughters to talk about identity, culture, migration, belonging and their hopes for the future.

As part of the project, Afghan Women on the Move held storytelling workshops and worked closely with participants to create a safe space where women and girls could share their experiences in their own words. For some, it was the first time they had shared their stories publicly.

On International Day of the Girl, their words are a powerful reminder of the importance of girls growing up knowing their voice matters and that they have the right to shape their own future.

Supporting Students in Canterbury-Bankstown

We’re grateful to Revesby Workers' Club for a generous grant supporting Mercy Works Connect NSW.

The funding will help us continue providing in-class mentoring and learning support to more than 100 students from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds at Bankstown Senior College Intensive English Centre and Belmore South Primary School.

Katrina Richardson recently represented Mercy Works at the Canterbury-Bankstown ClubGRANTS Presentation Ceremony at Revesby Workers’ Club, where 165 community projects received funding.

Thank you to Revesby Workers’ Club for supporting this work and helping us continue to be there for students in the local community.

“Even just one of these children”

Today is World Day of Migrants and Refugees.

This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, is “Even just one of these children”, with a particular focus on children and young people affected by migration and displacement.

Through Mercy Works Connect, volunteer mentors support students from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds with their learning, English and settling into school life.

Each week, more than 1,300 students and adult learners take part in Mercy Works Connect across NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, supported by more than 140 trained volunteer mentors.

On World Day of Migrants and Refugees, we celebrate the children, young people and families building their lives in Australia, and all those who help them feel welcome and supported.

Today, on Mercy Day, we celebrate 199 years since Catherine McAuley opened the first House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin.

What began there in 1827 continues today through the many people and organisations around the world who put Mercy into action.

At Mercy Works, we see this in the communities and partners we walk alongside. In Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, Sr Angela works with children through a street ministry that Mercy Works partners with the Archdiocese of Port Moresby to support, helping children access education and remain in school.

As we begin the journey towards 200 years of Mercy in 2027, we give thanks for everyone who is part of this work – our community partners, supporters, schools, volunteers and the wider Mercy community.

Mercy is something we do.

Happy Mercy Day. 💙

More than a job 💛

Mercy Works’ Andrew Lowry and Kim Lee recently spent time at the Romero Centre in Brisbane, meeting staff, volunteers and people seeking asylum who are rebuilding their lives in Australia.

They joined a Pathways to Employment workshop, where around 20 participants received practical help with job applications, forms and paperwork.

During the visit, Romero Centre Support Facilitator Misha Emingerova shared the story of a participant who found work in cleaning and laundry services at a local hospital. She spoke proudly about wearing the same uniform as the doctors and nurses and feeling part of the hospital team.

For her, having a job meant more than earning an income. It gave her a real sense of pride and belonging.

The Romero Centre supports people seeking asylum with everything from food and emergency assistance to English and computer classes, employment support and opportunities to connect with the community.

Through our partnership with the Romero Centre, Mercy Works is helping people seeking asylum build skills, find employment and establish their lives in Australia.
We are also grateful to the Religious of Queensland and the Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta community, whose generous support helps make this work possible.

Sometimes learning starts with a pair of knitting needles. 🧶🐰

For more than four years, one of our wonderful Mercy Works Connect volunteers has been giving her time each week to support primary school students with their learning.

During the morning, she helps with reading, spelling, writing and maths. After lunch, she teaches a student to knit within the classroom. Every two weeks, a new child gets a turn, building fine motor skills, concentration and perseverance along the way.

At the end of their two weeks, each child takes home something they’ve made themselves, like this little knitted bunny.

Mercy Works Connect volunteers support students and adult learners from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, bringing time, patience and encouragement to help them learn, grow and build confidence.

Clean laundry. Better health. Stronger communities.

Mercy Works is proud to expand our partnership with the Aboriginal Investment Group by funding the Borroloola Remote Laundry throughout FY2027.

Recently, Executive Director Sally Bradley RSM and Head of Programs Andrew Lowry travelled to Borroloola with Aboriginal Investment Group CEO Elizabeth Morgan-Brett and Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Indigenous Corporation CEO Robert Wendl to visit the laundry and mark Mercy Works' support for the coming year.

While access to clean clothes and bedding may seem simple, it can have a significant impact on health. Regular washing and hot drying help reduce the spread of scabies mites and other bacteria that can contribute to serious health conditions, including skin infections, kidney disease and rheumatic heart disease.

The Borroloola Remote Laundry provides free access to laundry facilities for community members and is one example of how practical, community-led solutions can improve health and wellbeing.

We are grateful to partner with the Aboriginal Investment Group and local communities to support initiatives that promote dignity, health and opportunity.

One caring volunteer can make a lasting difference. 💜

Recently, the Belmont Conversational Beginner's English class came together to celebrate Mercy Works Connect volunteer mentor Terry and all they had achieved together.

Terry has generously shared his time and talents with Mercy Works Connect for many years, supporting students in schools and, since September last year, leading the Belmont Conversational Beginner's English class. He also volunteers at Balga Senior High School, helping students build confidence in their English.

Through practical conversation, reading, pronunciation and everyday English, Terry has supported people from refugee, asylum-seeker and migrant backgrounds to build language skills, confidence and connections. Along the way, he has shared a touch of Australian culture, plenty of humour, and unwavering encouragement.

"I focus on pronunciation because many of the students read English well but haven't had many opportunities to speak English in conversation," Terry said. "It's a wonderful experience. We have a wonderful team."

Volunteer mentors are at the heart of Mercy Works Connect, walking alongside people from refugee, asylum-seeker and migrant backgrounds as they build language skills, confidence and a sense of belonging.

Thank you, Terry, for your compassion, commitment and generosity. Your support has made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many learners.
