HeartKids

HeartKids Our purpose is to help every child, teenager, and adult in Australia with CHD have a fighting chance to live a long, healthy, and fulfilling life.

HeartKids are champions of the heart as Australia’s leading childhood-onset heart disease (CoHD) charity, and the only not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and advocating for children, teens, adults, and their families impacted by CoHD. HeartKids is the only national not-for-profit organisation that is solely focused on supporting and advocating for all people impacted by childhood

onset heart disease, one of the largest causes of infant death in Australia. We are the voice for all people impacted by CHD, the largest cause of infant death in Australia. Our purpose is to help them and their families to lead the most fulfilling life possible and to reach their personal goals. For over forty years HeartKids has provided assistance to families, young people, and adults living with congenital heart disease by making available reliable and evidence-based information and timely support, funding research, and making new opportunities possible. Some startling statistics:
• Eight babies are born with heart disease in Australia every day. That is almost 3000 every year. One if 3 hours.
• Congenital heart disease is the single biggest killer of children under the age of one in Australia.
• Approximately half of the children diagnosed with heart disease require surgery to correct it.
• Each week more than four Australians pass away as a result of congenital heart disease.
• It is estimated that 32,000 children (under 18 years of age) are currently living with congenital heart disease in Australia.
• Some children acquired heart disease - often as a result of rheumatic fever, which is prevalent in many communities. HeartKids is striving to increase awareness of congenital heart disease through various campaigns and advocacy programs.

As National Reconciliation Week draws to a close, we're delighted to share two new beautiful songs now available in the our Resource Library.

Developed by local communities in the Northern Territory and facilitated by Children's Ground, these songs share important messages about heart health and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). We're grateful to have worked alongside the Children's Ground team to help make these resources available to more families and communities.

Today we're featuring Look After Your Heart (One Life), a song that encourages children to build healthy habits and look after their hearts.

Also now available in the Resource Library is Rheumatic Heart Fever: Not To Be Played With, supporting awareness and education about rheumatic fever and RHD.

Meet Leonie Brassey 👋

Leonie is a bereaved heart mum taking on not one, but two major endurance events in 2026 to raise vital funds for HeartKids.

After already completing a triathlon in the Cook Islands in May 1, she is now preparing to run the Sydney Marathon this August- what a tremendous achievement! 🌟

"My son William was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in 2005. He sadly passed away 6 weeks later. He was 21 in January 2026 so this is the year of fundraising for his 21st Birthday."

Leonie is so close to reaching her fundraising goal of $4,000 and we're incredibly grateful for her amazing efforts ❤️

All donations from both events are being directed through her Sydney Marathon fundraising page. If you'd like to support Leonie in achieving her goal, donate here: https://sm26.grassrootz.com/heartkids/leonie-brassey

On June 5, Nathan will be walking 45km while pushing a lawn mower from Campbelltown Sports Stadium to Leichhardt Oval, raising funds and awareness for families impacted by childhood-onset heart disease (CoHD). His goal is to raise $450,000 for HeartKids, a cause deeply connected to his own family’s journey.

These funds will allow us to keep our wonderful support team in the hospitals so they can be there for our families.

We’re incredibly grateful for Nathan’s generosity and commitment to making a difference for our community ❤️
