HeartKids

HeartKids Our purpose is to help every child, teenager, and adult in Australia with CHD have a fighting chance to live a long, healthy, and fulfilling life.

HeartKids is Australia’s only national organisation dedicated to children, young people and families impacted by childhood-onset heart disease (CoHD), providing information, support, connection and advocacy across every stage of their unique journey. HeartKids is the only national not-for-profit organisation that is solely focused on supporting and advocating for all people impacted by childhood o

nset heart disease, one of the largest causes of infant death in Australia. We are the voice for all people impacted by CHD, the largest cause of infant death in Australia. Our purpose is to help them and their families to lead the most fulfilling life possible and to reach their personal goals. For over forty years HeartKids has provided assistance to families, young people, and adults living with congenital heart disease by making available reliable and evidence-based information and timely support, funding research, and making new opportunities possible. Some startling statistics:
• Eight babies are born with heart disease in Australia every day. That is almost 3000 every year. One if 3 hours.
• Congenital heart disease is the single biggest killer of children under the age of one in Australia.
• Approximately half of the children diagnosed with heart disease require surgery to correct it.
• Each week more than four Australians pass away as a result of congenital heart disease.
• It is estimated that 32,000 children (under 18 years of age) are currently living with congenital heart disease in Australia.
• Some children acquired heart disease - often as a result of rheumatic fever, which is prevalent in many communities. HeartKids is striving to increase awareness of congenital heart disease through various campaigns and advocacy programs.

Preparing for your child's surgery can be overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate it alone. ❤️

Our HeartKids resource library contains a range of helpful and informative videos to support families through the challenges of childhood-onset heart disease (CoHD).

In this CHD Real Talk video, parents share their experiences of preparing for their heart kid's surgeries. You can hear useful tips on how to prepare mentally, emotionally, and practically for the challenges that lie ahead. ❤️

Some people may not be aware of one of the newer events on our HeartKids calendar: The Big Heart Lunch ❤️

We've now hosted two Big Heart Lunches in Melbourne and our first in Brisbane, with our second Adelaide event happening next week!

One of the highlights of both the Big Heart Lunch and our WA Gala Ball is the Heart of the Community Award. This award recognises an individual that has made a significant impact on the HeartKids community. We honour those who go above and beyond to give back by offering support, raising awareness, or contributing their time and resources.

Here are some of our wonderful recipients so far 🌟

01/09/2026

Today, on International Bereaved Father's Day, we honour all the dads who have experienced the immense grief of losing a child. 💙

Fatherhood does not end with loss. It lives on through the love you carry, the memories you hold close, and a bond that will always remain.

At this time, and always, we extend our love to all the bereaved fathers in our HeartKids community ❤️

How cute is this?! 😍

Take a look at at our beautiful heart bubbas who have just started playgroup!

As many of you would have seen, we had the beautiful Arlen graduate recently, so it's exciting to welcome our new group of little learners as they begin the Early Childhood Program with us.

We can't wait to watch them grow and thrive ❤️

We’re always incredibly grateful for the time and understanding of the work we do from Members of Parliament.

A big part of ensuring that our services can grow and expand is through advocacy.

We’re truely grateful to you, Donna Davis MP, for taking the time to listen, learn more about the challenges faced by HeartKids families and understand the importance of the services we provide. ❤️

Thanks Joelene for meeting up for coffee and a chat about HeartKids and the support Heartkids provides to hundreds of families across Western Sydney.

Joelene and her family moved from Leeton to live close to The Children's Hospital at Westmead so their son could receive specialist cardiac care. The support that Heartkids and Ronald McDonald House Greater Western Sydney provide families living with children with heart conditions is simply extraordinary.

I had to ask Joelene if she was named after Dolly's song - no was the reply however she has her name sung to her on a very regular basis. 🎤 🎶
